Build Your Master Key System Online — No Software Required
Managing keys for a commercial building, apartment complex, or multi-site business gets complicated fast. You need a Grand Master Key (GMK) that opens everything, sub-masters for building managers, and change keys for individual doors — all without cross-keying or phantom keys.
That’s why we built the Master Key System Builder right inside our Customer Portal. It’s a free tool that lets you design, validate, and print professional keying schedules — the same way we do it in our shop.
What Is a Master Key System?
A master key system is a hierarchy of keys where different keys open different groups of locks, but one master key opens them all. Here’s how the hierarchy works:
The GMK (Grand Master Key) sits at the top and opens every lock in the entire system. Below that, sub-master keys each open a group of locks — like all the doors in one building. At the bottom level, change keys are individual keys that each open only one specific lock.
For example, a property management company with three buildings might have one GMK for the owner, three sub-masters (one per building manager), and 30 change keys (one per tenant door). The owner’s key opens everything. Building A’s manager can only open Building A doors. And each tenant can only open their own unit.
What Our Builder Does
Generates Industry-Standard Bitting Charts
Select your lock system and the builder generates mathematically valid key bittings using real locksmith rules. We currently support Schlage C Keyway, Kwikset KW1, Yale Y1/Y2, Corbin Russwin L4, and SFIC/Best A2 — with more lock systems being added regularly.
Every generated key is validated for MACS compliance, anti-cross-keying (change keys differ in at least two positions), and phantom key risk.
Calculates Pinning Charts Automatically
For every lock in your system, the builder calculates the exact pin stack — bottom pins, master pins, and driver pins (or top/control-build pins for SFIC). This tells the locksmith exactly how to pin each cylinder so that all the right keys operate it.
One door, one lock, one pin chart. No guesswork.
Maps Doors to Keys by Building
The door schedule lets you organize your entire property. Add buildings with names and addresses, then add doors to each building with floor/location, assigned keys, and hardware notes. The GMK and control key (for SFIC systems) are automatically assigned to every door. You select which change keys and sub-masters open each specific door.
The key-to-door summary shows at a glance which doors each key opens — perfect for handing to property managers.
Exports Two Separate PDFs
When you’re ready to hand this to your locksmith (or to us), the builder creates two printable PDF documents. The door schedule PDF shows every building, every door, and which keys open it, plus a full bitting reference table. The pinning chart PDF is the technical document showing how to pin each individual lock, organized by building.
These are the same documents a professional locksmith uses to build a master key system from scratch.
Phantom Key Detection
One of the biggest risks in master keying is phantom keys — unintended key combinations that accidentally open locks they shouldn’t. Our builder counts potential phantom keys and warns you about high-risk configurations, like consecutive chambers that both have master pins.
The 2-step depth system used by conventional lock systems keeps master pins at exactly size 2, which naturally minimizes phantom key risk.
Encrypted and Secure
All bitting data is encrypted before it’s stored — the same approach used by professional key management systems. Your keying schedules are protected, and only you can access them through your portal account.
Track Every Key You Issue
Designing a master key system is only half the job. Once your system is built and keys are cut, you need to know where every key is at all times. That’s why the Customer Portal also includes a Key Tracker — a separate tool built specifically for managing issued keys.
With the Key Tracker, you can log every key you hand out, record who received it and when, track which keys have been returned, and flag keys that are overdue or unaccounted for. If a tenant moves out or an employee leaves, you can see exactly which keys they were issued and whether they’ve all been returned before you rekey.
For property managers and facility directors, this eliminates the spreadsheet guessing game. You get a single place to manage key assignments across all your buildings — and it ties directly into the master key systems you’ve designed in the builder.
Supported Lock Systems
We currently support five lock platforms, with more being added as we expand the tool:
Schlage C — depths 0 through 9, 2-step master keying on depths 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, MACS 7. Supports 5 or 6-pin cylinders with up to 3 sub-masters on 5-pin or 4 on 6-pin.
Kwikset KW1 — depths 1 through 7, 2-step depths 1, 3, 5, 7, MACS 4. Supports 5-pin cylinders with up to 2 sub-masters.
Yale Y1/Y2 — depths 0 through 9, 2-step depths 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, MACS 7. Supports 5 or 6-pin cylinders with up to 3 sub-masters on 5-pin or 4 on 6-pin.
Corbin Russwin L4 — depths 1 through 6, 2-step depths 1, 3, 5, MACS 4. Supports 5, 6, or 7-pin cylinders with up to 2 sub-masters on 5-pin, 3 on 6-pin, or 4 on 7-pin.
Best A2 SFIC — depths 0 through 9, column-sum-23 validation. Supports 6 or 7-pin cylinders with up to 20 sub-master groups — ideal for large commercial systems with hundreds of doors.
More lock systems are in development. If you need a specific keyway or platform that isn’t listed, let us know.
