Your First Gun Safe: Is the Hayman Ozarks Right for You?

OZ 5924 E - Hayman Ozarks Safe

Buying your first gun safe is surprisingly confusing. Big-box stores push $500 pressed-steel boxes labeled “fire safe” that won’t survive a house fire and won’t survive a determined teenager with a pry bar. On the other end, premium safes from Liberty or Fort Knox start around $2,500 and climb past $6,000 fast. So where does the honest floor actually sit?

For most first-time Brevard County buyers, it sits right around the Hayman Ozarks — our entry-level recommendation for a real, UL-listed, lifetime-guaranteed gun safe without wandering into premium territory.

Who the Hayman Ozarks is right for

The Ozarks is the best fit if you recognize yourself in any of these:

  • A new gun owner storing 3–10 firearms who wants honest protection without spending $4,000
  • A parent who needs to keep firearms out of kids’ hands and compliant with Florida’s safe-storage expectations (important for insurance and liability)
  • A renter or first-time homeowner who doesn’t want a 500+ pound safe that costs more to move than the firearms it holds
  • A hunter with basic needs — a couple of long guns, a pistol or two, scopes, ammo, some documents
  • A homeowner protecting passports and a little cash alongside one or two firearms

What you actually get in an Ozarks

Two sizes available: the OZ 5518 E ($1,390, 55″ tall × 18″ wide) and the OZ 5924 E ($1,890, 59″ tall × 24″ wide). Both ship with:

  • Electronic keypad lock (the “E” in the model number) with emergency backup key
  • Enhanced-thickness door to resist pry attacks — the #1 attack method on cheap safes
  • 3-way active boltwork with multiple locking bolts
  • Flexible interior with adjustable shelving and gun rack positions
  • UL RSC (Residential Security Container) label — the entry-level UL burglary rating
  • 30-minute fire protection
  • Lifetime burglary guarantee from Hayman

That last point matters more than people realize. Hayman has been building safes in Oviedo, Florida since 1971. When they stand behind a safe with a lifetime burglary guarantee, it’s not marketing — it’s a 50-year track record.

The models side-by-side

OZ 5518 E ($1,390) — 55″ tall × 18″ wide × 16″ deep, 240 lbs. Fits 8–10 long guns or equivalent pistol/document storage. Good for a closet, bedroom corner, or home office. The choice if you have 5–8 firearms and limited floor space.

OZ 5924 E ($1,890) — 59″ tall × 24″ wide × 18″ deep, 345 lbs. Fits 14+ long guns plus shelving. Good for a collector starting out, a household with multiple hunters, or anyone who wants headroom to grow.

The $500 difference between the two is almost entirely capacity — same lock, same fire rating, same construction. When in doubt, size up. The #1 regret we hear from safe buyers is “I should have gone bigger.”

When the Ozarks is NOT the right pick

Honest take — skip the Ozarks if:

  • You want 90-minute fire protection. The Ozarks has 30 minutes. Step up to the Hayman BlackHills for 90-minute fire.
  • You’re protecting a collection worth $20,000+. At that point the Hayman Rockies Series (1/2″ solid steel door, 2+ hour fire rating) is cheap insurance.
  • You need rapid access for home defense. A keypad safe takes 5–10 seconds to open. The patented Hayman Minuteman installs in a wall and presents the firearm in about two seconds.
  • You’re insurance-driven and need a rated burglary cert. If your homeowners or umbrella policy requires a UL TL15 or TL30 label to cover high-value contents, the Ozarks (UL RSC) won’t qualify.

Florida-specific considerations

A few Brevard County realities worth thinking about:

Lightning fires. Florida leads the country in lightning strikes per square mile. A 30-minute fire rating covers most typical home fires where the fire department arrives quickly. If you’re in a rural area of Brevard with slower response times, you may want to step up to 75- or 90-minute fire.

Humidity. We always recommend running a small rechargeable dehumidifier or desiccant canister inside any safe in Florida. Rust is the enemy and 80% summer humidity will find its way in.

Bolt-down is mandatory. A 240-lb safe is still walk-off-able with a hand truck. We always bolt every safe we install to the slab with concrete anchors. This single step defeats 90% of burglary attempts.

What Key-En-Lock includes

When you buy a Hayman Ozarks through us, here’s what shows up on delivery day:

  • Local delivery — we truck it from Hayman’s Oviedo factory (60 miles away) directly to your door
  • In-home placement — we carry it in and position it where you want it, not drop it at the curb
  • Bolt-down to slab — concrete anchors, drill, and installation tools on the truck
  • Setup and programming — initial master code, user codes, emergency backup keys handed off
  • Lifetime Hayman warranty support — we handle any warranty work directly with the factory

No curbside drops, no “good luck getting it upstairs,” no third-party delivery company who doesn’t know what a safe is.
