Rockies vs. BlackHills vs. TL30 — when to choose what

This is the decision most customers struggle with. Here’s how we frame it:

• Choose BlackHills if your collection is under $15K replacement cost and you want strong mid-tier protection. 90-min fire, 3/16″ door, full 11-gauge body — enough for most residential applications.
• Choose Rockies if your collection is $15K–$50K, you want lifetime premium construction, you live in a higher-risk rural setting, and you care about hurricane-and-fire survivability together.
• Choose MagnaVault TL30 if you need a rated burglary cert for a high-value insurance rider, or you’re storing jewelry, cash, or collectibles where the UL TL30 label is required for coverage. The Rockies is outstanding at resisting residential burglary but doesn’t carry the TL30 cert a jeweler or pawn shop needs.

When Rockies is NOT the right choice

• Your collection is under 15 firearms and under $10K total value. The Rockies is overbuilt for you. Start with the BlackHills.
• You’re budget-constrained. The Ozarks and BlackHills are genuinely good safes — the Rockies jumps into premium territory where the value curve flattens.
• You need commercial/cash/jewelry burglary rating for insurance. Ask your agent specifically what UL rating they require — Rockies is RSC-labeled, not TL15 or TL30.

Florida-specific considerations

Hurricane survivability. A Rockies bolted to a slab isn’t moving in any storm that leaves your house structurally intact. Even partial structure collapse scenarios often leave safe contents intact — the construction is designed for sustained impact.

Long-burn fires. Lightning-triggered attic fires in Brevard frequently burn 90+ minutes before full knockdown. The Rockies 2+ hour fire rating is genuine protection — documents, heirloom items, and firearms come out without thermal damage.

Coastal humidity. The larger interior of a Rockies (especially the 6536 and 7242) means you want a stronger dehumidification setup. We spec active plug-in dehumidifier rods on all Rockies installs, not just desiccant canisters.
