⚠️ Important

Don't Make It Worse — Read This First

Stop before you try these common mistakes:

  • Tweezers — usually push the fragment deeper or cause it to rotate sideways
  • Needle-nose pliers — same problem, and they can score the keyway
  • Lubricant spray (WD-40) — makes the fragment slippery and harder to grip with extraction tools
  • Superglue on a stick — frequently bonds to the keyway, not the fragment, making the whole thing worse
  • Forcing another key in — pushes the fragment further in and can damage the pins

Leave the fragment where it is and call us. Professional extraction tools are designed specifically for this — attempting DIY removal first makes our job harder and sometimes impossible.

The Process

How Broken Key Extraction Works

1We Assess the LockWe check the keyway, depth of the fragment, and whether it has rotated — this determines which extraction tools to use.
2Extract the FragmentUsing professional hook picks and extractors sized for your keyway, we grab and remove the broken piece intact.
3Inspect the LockWe check for keyway scoring or pin damage. In most cases the lock is fine and can be used immediately.
4Cut a New KeyWe cut a replacement key on-site from our blank inventory — or rekey the lock if old keys may be floating around.
Why Keys Break

Common Causes of Broken Keys

Understanding why your key broke helps prevent it from happening again after we cut a replacement.

Worn-Down Key

Keys thin out over years of use. When the metal gets thin enough, normal turning force snaps it. If your key was visibly worn, get a new original-cut spare — not a copy of a worn key.

Stiff or Dry Lock

A lock cylinder that hasn't been lubricated in years requires extra force to turn — that extra torque is what snaps the key. After extraction we'll lubricate the cylinder.

Misaligned Door

Seasonal swelling, settling foundations, or loose hinges can misalign the door so the deadbolt binds under load, putting stress on the key.

Poor-Quality Duplicate

Keys cut from worn originals or on poorly calibrated kiosk machines are slightly off-profile. They flex under load instead of turning cleanly. Always get keys cut by a professional locksmith.

FAQ

Broken Key Extraction — FAQ

Will you damage my lock during extraction?

Rarely. Professional extraction tools are designed to remove fragments without scoring the keyway or disturbing the pins. If the fragment is severely corroded or the keyway is already damaged, we'll explain the situation before proceeding.

Can you cut me a new key after extraction?

Yes. We carry key blanks for most residential, commercial, and automotive applications. We cut a replacement on-site immediately after extraction.

How long does extraction take?

Most extractions are completed in 15–30 minutes on-site. A severely stuck or corroded fragment may take longer.

Can you extract a key broken in a car ignition?

Yes. Ignition extraction is slightly more complex than door lock extraction but we handle it regularly. After extraction we can also cut a replacement car key on-site.

Should I rekey after extraction?

If the key broke because it was worn or a cheap copy, rekeying isn't necessary — just get a new key cut from scratch. If the key may have been duplicated without your knowledge, rekeying gives you peace of mind.

Do you charge extra for after-hours calls?

A modest after-hours fee applies for late-night calls. We always disclose this before dispatching — no surprise charges on arrival.

Key Broke in the Lock?

Don't make it worse trying to DIY it. Call Key-En-Lock — we extract cleanly, cut you a new key, and you're back to normal fast.
