Kawneer Exit Hardware

Kawneer Panic Hardware & Exit Devices

Aluminum storefront OEM exit devices, pivots, and thermal entrance hardware. Authorized service for Kawneer 1686/1786 and the Trifab / Clearwall / 350/500/451 entrance systems across Brevard County.

About Kawneer (Arconic)

Kawneer is the largest manufacturer of aluminum storefront framing systems in North America, owned by Arconic and specified on a massive share of commercial buildings across Florida. If your building has an aluminum-frame entrance with the frame stamped "Kawneer" — likely Trifab, Clearwall, 350, 500, or 451 — the original exit devices were almost certainly Kawneer 1686 or 1786 series, engineered to integrate cleanly with Kawneer frame tolerances.

Because Kawneer manufactures both the door frame and the exit hardware, Kawneer devices fit Kawneer frames better than generic replacements. We service, repair, and replace the full Kawneer entrance stack — exit devices, offset pivots, continuous hinges, overhead concealed closers, thresholds, and thermally-broken entrance hardware.

Key-En-Lock sources OEM Kawneer parts through ASSA ABLOY's commercial supply chain for exact-fit replacement. For discontinued 1686 devices, we cross-reference to current 1786 series or recommend a compatible Jackson 1085 or Von Duprin 33A that physically fits the Kawneer frame.

Available Trims & Lever Options

The trim is the outside hardware attached to the exit device — the lever, pull, thumbpiece, or knob that determines how the door opens from the outside when unlocked. Inside remains the panic bar (for code-compliant free egress). Below are the standard trim options available for Kawneer exit devices:

Trim Code Type Function Description
1286 Kawneer lever trim Key retracts latch OEM Kawneer lever trim for 1686/1786 series. Matching Kawneer aesthetics.
Pull Kawneer architectural pull Key retracts latch Aluminum pull handle matching Kawneer entrance hardware.
Ladder Ladder pull Key retracts latch Vertical ladder-style pull handle — modern commercial aesthetic.
Cyl Key cylinder trim Key retracts latch Minimal outside cylinder trim — paired with pull or thumbpiece.
Thumbturn Inside thumbturn Inside locks/unlocks Inside thumbturn for manual locking without key.
DT Dummy trim Aesthetic only Matching dummy for inactive door of a pair.
EO Exit only No outside trim Emergency egress only — no outside hardware.

Available Finishes

Finishes are specified using ANSI/BHMA finish codes. The most common finishes for commercial door hardware in Florida are satin chrome (626), satin stainless (630), and oil-rubbed bronze (613). Most trims can be ordered in any of these finishes:

628

Common Kawneer Repairs

  • 1686/1786 push bar won't fully retract — internal chassis spring or cam wear. Serviceable on-site.
  • Door sagging, dragging, scraping the frame — Kawneer offset pivot wear, replaceable in under an hour. Critical to use OEM Kawneer pivots — generic pivots don't fit correctly.
  • Latch dropping before door is fully closed — strike alignment or worn latch bolt.
  • Overhead closer leaking hydraulic fluid — closer is dead. Full OHCC replacement from the door header, on-site.
  • Thermally-broken Insulclad frame separating from pivot — frame-specific repair that most general locksmiths don't touch. We handle it.
  • End cap damaged from repeated impact — OEM replacement part.
  • Trifab entrance door won't align with frame — pivot adjustment + threshold leveling, typically both issues together.

Electrification & Access Control Integration

Adding electric latch retraction (EL) or other electrification options turns mechanical Kawneer devices into access-control-capable entrances. Exit remains code-compliant free egress from the inside, but outside entry becomes scheduled, credentialed, or automated. See our full electrification overview on the main panic hardware page.

  • Kawneer 1786-EL — Electric latch retraction version for current 1786 devices. Purpose-built integration with Kawneer frames.
  • Electric strike pairing — For older 1686 devices where EL isn't available, we pair the mechanical device with a Kawneer-compatible electric strike (or Von Duprin 6000 series).
  • Automatic operator integration — Kawneer Trifab and Clearwall entrances with automatic operators wire directly into PDK.io or standard card/keypad access control systems.
  • Request-to-Exit (REX) switch — Required for any electrified Kawneer installation. Integrates with door position monitoring.
  • Fire alarm release — Kawneer automatic operators release to manual operation on fire alarm, per NFPA 101.

Kawneer FAQ

How do I know if my storefront is Kawneer?

Look for "Kawneer" stamped in small lettering on the door frame — usually on the threshold, header, or vertical stile edge. Also check the manufacturer labels on the overhead closer and pivots. If your building plans or spec docs reference "Trifab," "Clearwall," or "350/500/451," those are Kawneer system designations. If you're not sure, send us a photo of the hardware and we can identify the brand.

Can I replace a Kawneer exit device with a Jackson or Von Duprin?

Often yes — Jackson 1085 and Von Duprin 33A have similar narrow-stile footprints and can be retrofitted to Kawneer doors. That said, Kawneer 1786 is purpose-built for Kawneer frames and fits with fewer compromises. For repairs, stick with Kawneer where parts are available. For full replacements where the device is discontinued, we often recommend Jackson 1085 for cost-efficiency or Von Duprin 33A for premium positioning.

My Kawneer offset pivot is worn — can I use a generic replacement?

Strongly recommend OEM Kawneer. Generic aluminum storefront pivots have different hole patterns, offset distances, and bearing surfaces. A generic pivot might physically mount but won't align the door correctly, leading to premature wear on the opposite pivot and continued sagging. OEM Kawneer pivots cost more but actually fix the problem.

Do you service Kawneer Insulclad thermal entrances?

Yes. Insulclad entrances have thermally-broken aluminum framing (aluminum-polyamide-aluminum sandwich) that requires specific pivots, closers, and repair techniques. We handle the full Insulclad stack including the unique pivot geometry and thermal-break integrity during repair.

Does Kawneer have fire-rated exit devices?

Yes. The 1786 series is available as UL-listed fire-rated for rated door assemblies. The older 1686 series has fire-rated variants as well, though availability depends on specific configuration. For fire-rated Kawneer entrances in Florida, the full hardware stack (device + frame + door) must carry matching fire labels for the rating to hold.
