How does SmartKey rekeying actually work?
The SmartKey cylinder has internal sliders that align with a specific key shape. To rekey: insert the current key and turn to the 12 o'clock position, insert the SmartKey learn tool, turn it 90° and pull it out, insert the new key and turn 180°. The sliders realign to the new key, and the old key stops working. Total time: about 20-30 seconds per lock. No pinning required, no core swaps, no locksmith. Can I combine Kwikset Commercial with Schlage or other brands in the same building?
Yes, but the key systems won't integrate — Kwikset KW1 keyway is physically incompatible with Schlage C.
