What is SmartKey?
SmartKey is Kwikset's proprietary rekey system. Instead of standard pin-tumbler cylinders, SmartKey locks use a sliding plate mechanism that you can rekey with a small tool and a new key — in under 30 seconds.
- DIY rekey in 30 seconds — insert current working key, insert SmartKey tool, insert new key, turn. Done.
- BumpGuard — SmartKey cylinders are bump-resistant, with internal features that block standard bump-key attacks
- All SmartKey locks use KW1-compatible blanks — any locksmith can cut a key; only Kwikset-ecosystem rekeys use the tool
- Works on most Kwikset — 660, 980, Signature Series, Halo, Aura, SmartCode, and handlesets available with SmartKey
That said — if you prefer standard pin-tumbler rekeying, we still rekey Kwikset SmartKey locks using the standard $20/cylinder service, same as any other brand.
No locksmith required for same-brand rekeys
How to Pick the Right Kwikset Smart Lock
Kwikset has three smart lock tiers. The choice depends on what connectivity you want and whether you prefer a keypad or fingerprint.
Pick Halo if...
You want built-in WiFi, a keypad, and Amazon/Google integration out of the box. No hub needed. Most-requested Kwikset smart lock.
Pick Halo Touch if...
You want fingerprint unlock instead of a keypad. Same WiFi and smart home features as Halo. Popular for doors used by household members who prefer biometric entry.
Pick Aura if...
You want a keypad smart lock without WiFi or cloud dependency. Bluetooth-only, controlled from your phone when you're within range. Good for privacy-conscious households.
Pick SmartCode 888 / 914 if...
You want a standalone keypad lock — no app, no WiFi, no cloud. Set your codes at the keypad, done. Great for vacation rentals and in-law suites.
Pick Kevo if...
You already have a Kevo or want touch-to-open Bluetooth on a front door. Legacy but still supported — and we can service yours.

We also install Schlage smart locks (Encode, Sense, BE469) and Lockly (Secure Plus fingerprint). Call and we'll help you pick.

Kwikset Lock FAQ
How much does Kwikset deadbolt installation cost?
Standard Kwikset 660 or 980 deadbolt installed runs $95-$165. Signature Series deadbolts run $120-$195. Halo WiFi smart lock runs $225-$325 installed with app and user code setup. Aura Bluetooth runs $185-$275. Labor-only rates apply if you supply the hardware.
Can I rekey my Kwikset SmartKey lock myself?
Yes, if you have the current working key and the small SmartKey learning tool that came with your lock. Kwikset designed SmartKey specifically for DIY rekey. If you've lost the learn tool or your working key, we can rekey it with standard locksmith tools for $20 per cylinder.
Can any locksmith cut Kwikset keys?
Yes. Kwikset uses the KW1 keyway, which is one of the most common residential blanks in North America. Every locksmith and most hardware stores can cut Kwikset keys. For restricted or high-security keys see MX Locks or Medeco.
Is Kwikset as secure as Schlage?
For standard Grade 2 models, they're comparable in forced-entry resistance. Schlage's narrower SC1 keyway is slightly more pick-resistant by default. Kwikset's SmartKey has BumpGuard protection against bump-key attacks. Both brands have Grade 1 options if maximum security is the priority — Kwikset 816/818 or Schlage B80/B81.
Can you rekey a Kwikset lock to match my Schlage keys?
No. Kwikset uses KW1 keyway, Schlage uses SC1 — the keys are physically different and can't be combined on one key. If you want one key for every door, we can rekey all your doors to Kwikset OR all to Schlage, but not mix. Most homeowners pick whichever brand they already have the most of.
Do you install Kwikset Halo with my existing WiFi network?
Yes. Halo uses 2.4 GHz WiFi and pairs through the Kwikset app. We install the lock, connect it to your WiFi, set up your user codes, and walk you through the app so you can add additional users after we leave. Typical full install runs 30-45 minutes.
Do you carry Kwikset hardware on your truck?
Yes. Our mobile service vehicle stocks the most-requested Kwikset 660, 980, Halo, and Aura models in satin nickel, Venetian bronze, and matte black finishes. Less common Signature Series finishes or handleset styles may be next-day from a Brevard County distributor.
Can Kwikset SmartKey be picked?
Early SmartKey versions (pre-2014) had known vulnerabilities. Current-generation SmartKey (SmartKey Security) addresses those issues with redesigned internals. We still recommend UL437-rated cylinders for high-security applications — see Medeco or Mul-T-Lock.
