About LCN
LCN is the commercial door closer industry standard. Architects write "LCN or equal" the way they write "Von Duprin 99 Series or equal" for panic hardware — and for the same reason: LCN closers outlive most buildings. The 4040XP Super Smoothee has been specified on schools, hospitals, government buildings, and institutional commercial for decades, and there are still 30-year-old LCN 1070 closers running smoothly that nobody has ever serviced.
Owned by Allegion (same parent as Von Duprin, Falcon, Schlage), LCN has the mature distributor network that makes same-visit repairs possible. We carry common LCN service parts on the truck — arms, arm shoes, cover plates, spring cartridges for 4040XP and 4041 — so most "closer slams" or "closer leaks" calls get fixed on the first visit rather than quoted and scheduled.
Three things make LCN genuinely hard to match: the patented Green Dial spring force adjustment (foolproof sizing 1-6 without guesswork), the 30-year limited warranty on 4040XP (industry longest), and the all-weather fluid that keeps the closer consistent from Florida summer to winter cold snap. For coastal Brevard installations where salt air destroys lesser closers, LCN's cast-iron body with forged steel arm is the right tool for the job.

Arm Types & Mounting Configurations
Door closer arm choice is the single biggest decision after brand/size — it determines mounting location, how the door behaves when fully open, and whether hold-open or controlled-stop is built in.
| Code | Arm Type | Mount | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| RwPA | Regular with Parallel Arm bracket | Tri-pack (3 mounts) | Most flexible LCN arm shipped with the standard 4040XP tri-pack — configurable as pull-side regular, push-side top jamb, or push-side parallel arm depending on application. |
| HwPA | Hold-open with Parallel Arm | Parallel, hold-open | Friction hold-open arm — door stays open at an adjustable angle until manually closed. Common on service entries and receiving doors. |
| CUSH | Stop-cushion arm | Parallel only | Absorbs the shock of over-travel at full open — protects both the door and the adjacent wall. Parallel-arm mounting only. |
| SCUSH | Spring Cush arm | Parallel only | Spring-loaded cushion arm for additional stop absorption on high-abuse doors. |
| HCUSH | Hold-open Cush arm | Parallel only | Combines CUSH stop-cushion with friction hold-open — both functions on one arm. |
| Reg | Regular arm | Pull side only | Traditional pull-side regular arm — projects out into the room. Simplest mounting, lowest profile against door. |
| TJ | Top jamb | Push side (frame) | Closer body mounts on the frame, arm reaches to door. Common where the wall surface at the hinge side is not suitable for closer mounting. |
| FL | Fusible link (4111 FL) | Parallel (fire door) | Hold-open arm with a fusible link that melts at ~165°F — door automatically closes when triggered by fire temperature. Used on fire-rated doors where hold-open is desired in normal conditions but must release in fire. Not a substitute for magnetic hold-open tied to fire alarm. |
| DEL | Delayed action | Any mount | Incorporates standard 4041 cylinder with delayed closing from 120° to 70° (adjustable up to ~1 minute). For accessibility — gives disabled users extra time to pass through before closing begins. |
| EDA | Extra duty arm | Any mount | Heavy-duty reinforced arm for vandal-prone applications — thicker forged steel than standard arm. |
| TBSRT | Through-Bolt Self-Reaming Tapping | Mounting option | Mounting screw package — through-bolts the closer for maximum security on high-abuse doors where standard wood/sheet metal screws would eventually pull out. |

Common LCN Repair Scenarios
- Closer slamming the door — the closing-speed adjustment valve needs backing off, or the hydraulic fluid has leaked. Check valves first (5-minute fix), then evaluate for replacement if leaking.
- Door won't close all the way / latches weakly — latch speed valve set too slow, or spring force needs to go up a size. Green Dial adjustment on 4040XP handles this without tools.
- Closer leaking oil — internal seal failure. On a 4040XP or 4111 under warranty (30 years from install), Allegion covers cylinder replacement. Out of warranty, the closer is typically replaced rather than rebuilt.
- Arm broken or bent — arm is a separate replacement part from the cylinder. We stock common arms (RwPA, HwPA, PA) and can often swap on-site without full closer replacement.
- Closer won't hold open (HwPA variant) — friction adjustment on the arm needs tightening, or the hold-open cam has worn. Adjustment usually fixes it; worn cam is a parts replacement.
- CUSH arm not stopping the door (4041XP-CUSH) — cushion stop angle set past the wall or obstruction, or cushion has worn. Re-stop on-site.
- Fusible link (4111 FL) released falsely — fusible link replacement, and check ambient temperature at the link location (should not reach 165°F in normal operation).
- Cover loose or missing — non-handed plastic cover is a stock replacement part. Plated-finish metal covers are also available for 4040XP series.
- Door opening too hard (ADA non-compliance) — spring force set too high for the door. Green Dial adjustment down to the required ADA opening force (5 lbf interior, 8.5 lbf exterior). 4040XP covers sizes 1-6 so most buildings don't require closer replacement for ADA compliance.
- Loose mounting screws pulling out of wood door — upgrade to TBSRT through-bolt mounting. 20-minute upgrade during any service visit.
Automation & Access Control Integration
- LCN 4600 Series Auto Operator — Low-energy automatic door operator for ADA-accessible entries. Push-plate, push-bar, motion sensor, or card reader activation. Opens door, holds open for programmable time, then lets the integrated or separate closer close normally.
- LCN 4800 Series Auto Operator — Heavier-duty auto operator for high-traffic accessible entries. Same activation options as 4600 with higher cycle rating and stronger motor.
- Electric hold-open (magnetic) integration — LCN closers can be paired with separate magnetic hold-open devices that tie to the fire alarm. Door is held open during normal operation and releases on fire alarm activation — code-required alternative to fusible-link arms in many applications.
- Access control integration — When paired with an electric strike (e.g. Von Duprin 6000 series) or electrified panic device (99EL/QEL), LCN closers complete the access-controlled opening. We tie the full stack into PDK.io cloud access control or traditional card systems.
- Delayed-action cylinders (DEL option) — Incorporates standard 4041 cylinder with delayed closing from 120° to 70°, adjustable up to approximately 1 minute. Gives disabled users extra time to pass through before closing begins. An automation-adjacent feature that replaces what would otherwise require an auto operator on many ADA retrofits.
- SEM card reader integration — LCN auto operators support standard 12VDC or 24VDC input from most access control relays. Card-read → relay close → operator opens door → operator holds programmable time → closer returns door to closed. Clean integration with PDK.io and compatible systems.
Fire Rating & Code Compliance
- LCN 4040XP, 4041, 4111, 4031, 4011, and 4010/4020/4110 series are all UL and cUL listed for self-closing fire-rated doors.
- Fire-rated door assemblies require the closer to close the door fully without assistance on every cycle — no hold-open unless the hold-open device is tied to the fire alarm (magnetic) or fusible link (4111 FL).
- Fusible link hold-open (4111 FL) is permitted on most fire-rated doors — the link melts at ~165°F and the door closes automatically.
- ANSI/BHMA A156.4 Grade 1 certification on 4040XP and 4111 — meets or exceeds all commercial fire-rated door closer requirements.
- ADA opening force compliance: 5 lbf maximum for interior doors, 8.5 lbf for exterior. LCN Green Dial spring adjustment covers sizes 1-6, allowing tuning to ADA on most door sizes without closer replacement.
- NFPA 80 Standard for Fire Doors requires annual fire door inspection — including closer function verification. We perform NFPA 80 closer inspections as part of commercial service.

What's the difference between LCN 4040XP and 4111?
Both are Grade 1 heavy-duty. The 4040XP is the flagship workhorse — shipped in a tri-pack that gives you three mounting options (regular pull-side, push-side top-jamb, or push-side parallel arm) from the same unit. Most commercial installs use 4040XP. The 4111 Smoothee is parallel-arm only by design, purpose-built for push-side mounting on exterior doors up to 4'0" wide (or 5'0" interior). If you know the door is going to be a parallel-arm push-side install forever, 4111 is the right choice. If you want flexibility (or aren't sure), 4040XP.
What are RwPA, HwPA, and CUSH arm options?
Arm type determines what the door does at full open. RwPA = Regular with Parallel Arm bracket (the default tri-pack — flexible, covers most installs). HwPA = Hold-open with Parallel Arm (friction holds the door open at an adjustable angle until someone manually closes it — common on loading docks and service entries). CUSH = stop-cushion arm (absorbs over-travel at full open to protect the door and adjacent wall from impact). HCUSH = hold-open + cushion combined. SCUSH = spring-cushion for extra-abuse applications. Pick based on the door's behavior at full open.
What is the Green Dial and why does it matter?
LCN's patented Green Dial is a visible spring-force indicator on the closer body. Instead of counting turns of an adjustment screw and guessing, you turn the dial to the number corresponding to door size (1 for narrow interior, 6 for heaviest exterior). For ADA compliance, you set it just high enough to close and latch the door but below 5 lbf opening force (interior) or 8.5 lbf (exterior). It's the feature that separates LCN from budget competitors — adjustment is foolproof and doesn't require removing the cover.
How long should an LCN closer last?
The 4040XP has a 30-year limited warranty and in practice we regularly service 4040 and 1070 series installations that are 25-30 years old, still functional, and just need an arm replacement or a valve adjustment. For a heavy-traffic commercial exterior door, expect 15-20 years of hard service before anything more than arm/cover replacement is needed. For interior commercial, 25+ years is realistic. That's why LCN is the spec even though cheaper closers exist.
My LCN is leaking oil — can you rebuild it?
Generally no. Once the internal seals fail and fluid is leaking externally, the correct fix is cylinder replacement. On a 4040XP under its 30-year warranty, Allegion covers cylinder replacement. Out of warranty, a new cylinder is typically within 50-60% the cost of a full new 4040XP, so most buildings just replace the whole closer. We quote both options on-site so you can decide based on whether the existing arm and cover are worth saving.
Can you match my existing LCN finish?
Usually yes. The common LCN finishes are 689 (aluminum painted), 690 (statuary bronze), 691 (light bronze), 693 (black), 695 (dark bronze), and 696 (brass painted). Most commercial Brevard County installs are 689 or 695. We order-match to existing finish when replacing closers so the new unit visually matches adjacent doors. Less common finishes may add 2-4 weeks to lead time.
Is LCN 1250 a cross-brand replacement?
Yes — the LCN 1250 RwPA is specifically engineered as a direct replacement for the Norton 1600, Yale 50, Falcon/Dor-O-Matic SC60, LCN 1260, and International 8050 series closers. Mounting hole pattern matches, so in most cases you can swap the old closer for a 1250 without re-drilling the door. For low-frequency interior doors and storefront installations where the original brand has been discontinued or parts are unavailable, the 1250 is the fastest return-to-service option.
Do you service LCN overhead concealed closers (OHCC)?
Yes — LCN 2000 and 2100 Series overhead concealed closers. OHCC means the closer body mounts inside the frame head, invisible from both sides of the door. They're more expensive and more involved to service than surface closers (frame has to be accessed to adjust valves), but they're the right answer for architectural projects where the surface closer is visually unacceptable. See the door closer hub for a comparison with Rixson, Norton 7900, and dormakaba RTS concealed alternatives.
Can LCN closers integrate with my auto operator?
LCN makes their own auto operators (4600 and 4800 Series) that work seamlessly with existing LCN closers. If you already have an LCN 4040XP on a door and want to add accessibility automation, the 4600 Series low-energy operator pairs cleanly. For third-party operators (dormakaba, Record, Besam), LCN closers are compatible but the integration requires careful coordination of closing speed and operator timing — we've done both and can advise on what works best for your specific door.
