Medeco High-Security Cylinders

UL437-certified high-security cylinders that drop into virtually every commercial lock we install — Schlage ND, Sargent 10X, Corbin CL3300, Yale 5400LN, Best 9K, and every mortise, rim, and exit device we service. Factory-authorized Medeco dealer for Brevard County.

Parent company: ASSA ABLOY High Security and Aftermarket Group (HSAM) · Founded 1968 · HQ Salem, VA

About Medeco

Medeco was founded in 1968 in Salem, Virginia, with an inventive approach to making cylinders and keys more secure from surreptitious duplication and manipulation. The angled pin cut design — pins that must both elevate AND rotate to correct positions for the sidebar to clear and the cylinder to turn — was unprecedented in the lock industry and remains the foundation of Medeco\'s security architecture today. Over five decades later, Medeco is widely recognized as the North American benchmark for high-security cylindrical key control, trusted by federal government, DEA-regulated pharmacies, utilities, healthcare, courts, and critical infrastructure operators across the United States.

Medeco is part of the ASSA ABLOY High Security and Aftermarket Group (HSAM), alongside other high-security brands. Manufacturing continues at Salem, VA with the same engineering rigor and patent portfolio that defined the brand before ASSA ABLOY acquisition. Medeco cylinders are certified to UL437 for drill and pick resistance, ANSI/BHMA A156.30 Level A for high-security cylinders (Medeco was the first commercial product certified to this standard when BHMA introduced it), ANSI/BHMA A156.5 Grade 1 for cylindrical lock durability, and ANSI/BHMA A156.36 for deadbolts. The Medeco Maxum deadbolt has been recognized by Consumer Reports as "Best Door Lock" multiple times.

Key-En-Lock is the Brevard County authorized Medeco dealer. We carry restricted Medeco M3 and M4 blanks in stock, handle factory-authorized rekeys on-site, design and administer master key systems for multi-building facilities, and retrofit Medeco cylinders into existing commercial hardware across every brand we service. Our 20+ years of locksmith experience means we can drop Medeco cylinders into your Schlage, Sargent, Corbin Russwin, Yale, Best, Marks USA, or virtually any other commercial lockset without modification — and manage the key control program for decades afterward.

Commercial Hardware Retrofit — Where Medeco Fits

Medeco makes cylinders, not complete locksets. That\'s the strategic advantage: every commercial hardware brand we install — Schlage, Sargent, Corbin Russwin, Yale/ACCENTRA, Best, Marks USA, and the full Grade 2 lineup — accepts a Medeco cylinder retrofit. Order your commercial lockset "less cylinder" (LC variant) and install a Medeco cylinder in place of the standard one. Result: the same UL-rated commercial lockset with UL437-certified pick/drill/impression-resistant security and dealer-restricted key control. Below is the compatibility matrix across every cluster we service.

Cylinder Formats

Medeco produces cylinders in every format commercial hardware uses. Over 100 cylinder variants across the catalog cover virtually every retrofit need.

  • Rim cylinder — Mounts on the interior surface of the door, threaded shell connects to exit device or rim lock. The standard format for retrofitting exit devices (Von Duprin 99, Jackson 1085, etc) and mortise rim locks.
  • Mortise cylinder (1-1/8"-32) — Threaded mortise cylinder screws into mortise lockbody. Standard ANSI spec — fits virtually every commercial mortise lock from Schlage L9000 to Yale 8800. Cam options per manufacturer (Schlage cam, Sargent cam, Yale cam, CR cam, Adams Rite cam).
  • Key-in-Knob (KIK) — Conventional 6-pin cylinder that drops into cylindrical lever/knob locks. Standard format for Schlage ND, Sargent 10X, Corbin CL3300, Yale 5400LN, Marks 195, and dozens of other cylindrical lock lines.
  • SFIC (Small Format IC) — Figure-8 small-format interchangeable core. Medeco SFIC cores drop into any SFIC-compatible housing — Best 9K, Best 45H, Schlage BD variant, Sargent SFIC, CR SFIC, and others. 30-second rekey via control-key core swap, with UL437 cylinder security.
  • LFIC (Large Format IC) — Larger-profile interchangeable core for Medeco-brand LFIC housings and compatible hardware. Alternative to SFIC where higher security volume per core is needed.
  • Padlocks (System Series) — Medeco System Series indoor/outdoor padlocks with M3 or M4 cylinder. 5/16" hardened shackle. Used on utility gates, telecom cabinets, and industrial applications requiring UL437 key control on a portable lock.

Key Control Programs

Patented mechanical design is only half the high-security story. The other half is key control — ensuring blanks stay restricted, duplication stays authorized, and you always know who has a key to your facility.

ProgramHow It Works
Utility-patented keyway blanks Medeco M3, M4, and KeyMark key blanks carry utility patents. Blanks cannot be legally duplicated without Medeco authorization — Medeco aggressively enforces the patent against unauthorized duplicators.
Dealer restriction programs Every Medeco dealer signs a distribution agreement limiting blank and cylinder sales to authorized customers only. Key-En-Lock is the Brevard County authorized Medeco dealer — we pull your blanks from our restricted inventory.
Signature authorization lists High-security customers maintain an authorized-signature list with Medeco. Only named individuals can authorize key cuts — walk-in key duplication is structurally prevented.
Geographic key control Top-tier Medeco key systems are geographically restricted — only ONE authorized dealer per region can cut a specific keyway. For your region, only Key-En-Lock can cut your keys. Equivalent to Schlage Primus XP tier.
Key tracking & records Medeco customers receive key records per cylinder, key code per cut, and sign-out tracking for every key issued. Compliance-ready for DEA, HIPAA, and government audit requirements.
Anti-3D printing (M4) Medeco 4 keys incorporate movable elements that defeat 3D-printing key duplication attacks. This is an M4-exclusive feature — M3 keys have traditional static geometry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Medeco "high security" versus a regular commercial cylinder?

Two things: physical attack resistance and patented key control. On physical attack, Medeco cylinders are UL437 listed — the Underwriters Laboratories standard for drill, pick, impression, and manipulation resistance. The key uses angled pin cuts that must elevate AND rotate to correct positions for a sidebar to clear and the cylinder to turn — defeating traditional picking, bumping, and impression techniques. On key control, Medeco key blanks are utility-patented, which means blanks cannot be legally duplicated by hardware stores or unauthorized cutters. Only Medeco authorized dealers can cut keys, and only from authorized signatures on your customer list. A regular Schlage C key can be duplicated at any hardware store in 2 minutes; a Medeco M3 or M4 key cannot.

Can I put Medeco cylinders in my existing Schlage, Sargent, or Yale commercial locks?

Yes — Medeco makes retrofit cylinders for virtually every commercial manufacturer. Standard formats: 1-1/8"-32 UNS mortise cylinder with manufacturer-specific cam options (Schlage cam, Sargent cam, Yale cam, Corbin Russwin cam, Adams Rite cam) fits every major commercial mortise lock. KIK (key-in-knob) 6-pin cylinder fits cylindrical lever locks like Schlage ND, Sargent 10X, Yale 5400LN, Corbin CL3300, and Marks 195. SFIC cores drop into Best 9K, Best 45H, and any SFIC-compatible housing. Rim cylinders fit exit-device trims. See the retrofit matrix on this page for full brand coverage.

What is the difference between Medeco M3, M4, and BiLevel?

Three tiers. Medeco M4 is the current flagship — 4 side pins (3 finger pins + 1 lift pin), UL437 drill/pick resistance, utility-patented key control, ANSI A156.30 Level A, Anti-3D-Printing movable key elements. The top of the product line. Medeco M3 is the previous flagship — still produced, still UL437 certified, still ANSI A156.30 Level A, but without the M4's Anti-3D-Printing features. Existing M3 installations keep running; new specifications typically go M4. BiLevel (M3 or M4) has the patented key control and dealer-restricted blanks but doesn't include the full UL437 physical attack resistance features. BiLevel is for customers who need duplication control (employee turnover, multi-tenant) but don't need drill/pick resistance. All three platforms master-key together cleanly.

Does installing a Medeco cylinder void the UL fire rating on my commercial door?

No. Medeco cylinders themselves are compatible with UL fire-rated hardware. Swapping a factory cylinder for a Medeco cylinder on a UL-listed Schlage ND80PD, Yale 8800 mortise, or any other UL-rated commercial lock preserves the fire rating. The UL listing is on the lockset housing and strike — the cylinder is a consumable that can be swapped within the original housing without affecting UL certification. This is specifically documented in Medeco's UL437 certification.

How do I know a key cut claims to be a genuine Medeco?

Medeco keys have a distinctive angled cut pattern on the bitting edge — the cuts are not flat (like a Schlage or Kwikset key) but angled at various degrees. This angled cut requires a specialized Medeco key machine that only authorized dealers own. Additionally, Medeco blanks carry the utility patent stamp and dealer-restricted serialization. If someone hands you a Medeco-looking key without the angled cuts, or if the key came from a non-Medeco dealer, it's either counterfeit or from a non-authorized source — treat it as a key control breach and rekey.

Is Medeco owned by ASSA ABLOY — how does that affect service?

Medeco is part of the ASSA ABLOY High Security and Aftermarket Group (HSAM), which also includes other high-security brands. The acquisition has been stable for decades and hasn't changed Medeco's engineering, manufacturing, or dealer network — production continues at Salem, Virginia. ASSA ABLOY ownership actually benefits service: Medeco integrates cleanly with other ASSA ABLOY commercial hardware (Sargent, Corbin Russwin, Yale / ACCENTRA) and you can master-key Medeco cylinders across multiple ASSA ABLOY hardware brands in the same building.

Can I rekey Medeco myself, or does it require a locksmith?

Medeco rekeys require an authorized dealer. Unlike Schlage C or Kwikset KW1, you cannot pin a Medeco cylinder with hardware-store pins — the angled pin cuts require Medeco-specific pin stocks available only to authorized dealers. The patented keyway blank can't be legally duplicated outside the dealer network. This is the tradeoff of high-security key control: duplication is restricted to protect you, which means rekeys also go through the dealer. Key-En-Lock is the Brevard County authorized Medeco dealer — we handle all Medeco rekey, repinning, and master-system changes on-site.

How much does a Medeco cylinder cost compared to standard?

A Medeco M3 or M4 mortise or KIK cylinder runs $90–$180 depending on format and keyway tier. Compare to a standard Schlage C cylinder at $15–$30. The 3–6× cost premium buys UL437 physical attack resistance, patented dealer-restricted key control, utility-patent protection against unauthorized duplication, master-keyable depth for multi-building portfolios, and decades of proven performance in government, pharmaceutical, and critical infrastructure applications. For typical office doors this premium is overkill; for openings protecting controlled substances, sensitive data, high-value inventory, or people's safety, it's the standard spec.
