About Norton Door Controls

Norton Door Controls — formally Norton Rixson under ASSA ABLOY — is the primary Grade 1 commercial door closer competitor to LCN. For every project spec'd "LCN 4040XP or equal," the Norton 8000 Series is one of the devices that qualifies as equal. For buildings that are already standardized on ASSA ABLOY hardware (Yale locks, Sargent exit devices, Adams Rite storefront), Norton is often the spec that keeps parts consistency across the whole building.

Three things set Norton apart from LCN on the ground: the CLP8000 CloserPlus arm integrates a stop and hold-open function directly into the arm assembly (what LCN splits into separate CUSH and HW options); the 7570 Security Closer Line is purpose-built for detention, psychiatric, and vandal-prone institutional applications with fixed-link arms, orbital-riveted elbows, and Torx thread-locked fasteners (LCN doesn't have a dedicated security-closer family at this level); and the multi-size tri-pak 7500 lets one SKU cover sizes 1-6 with a single unit, reducing inventory burden on multi-building property managers.

Arm cross-compatibility is a meaningful service advantage: Norton 1600/9300/7500/8000 arms are mechanically interchangeable with Yale 50/2300/3000/4400 arms. If your building has a mix of Norton and Yale closers (very common on older ASSA ABLOY installations), we can often cross-source arm parts between them for faster same-visit repairs.

Arm Types & Mounting Configurations

Door closer arm choice is the single biggest decision after brand/size — it determines mounting location, how the door behaves when fully open, and whether hold-open or controlled-stop is built in.

CodeArm TypeMountFunction
Tri-Pak Multi-mount tri-pak 3 mount options Standard 7500/8000 arm package — can be installed as pull-side regular, push-side top-jamb, or push-side parallel from the same unit. Equivalent to LCN's RwPA tri-pak.
H Hold-open arm Any mount Friction hold-open arm — 7500H or 8000H variant. Holds door at adjustable angle until manually closed. Cross-compatible part with Yale (Norton 7701-3 = Yale 400-3).
CLP (CloserPlus) CloserPlus integrated arm Parallel Integrates stop + hold-open in one arm — 8000-series exclusive. What LCN does with separate CUSH + HW, Norton combines. One assembly, two functions.
UNI (Unitrol) Unitrol parallel arm Parallel Parallel arm with integrated dead-stop at adjustable angle — non-hold-open or hold-open variants. Similar in concept to LCN CUSH but different mechanism.
PR Parallel Rigid arm Parallel Non-articulating parallel arm for maximum rigidity and vandal resistance — no pivot point for attackers to leverage.
ST (Slide Track) Slide-track arm Push or pull Arm rides in a low-profile track rather than projecting — lower aesthetic impact, better for tight clearances. Non-hold-open or hold-open variants.
8080 Low Profile Low-profile arm Non-hold-open Reduced-projection arm for aesthetic installs — lower visual impact than standard arm, but non-hold-open only.
Security (7570) Security closer arm Any Fixed-link arm, permanent joints, orbital-riveted elbow, soffit joint, Torx thread-locked fasteners. Cannot be disassembled by tampering.
Reg / TJ / PA Regular / Top-Jamb / Parallel Any mount Standard 7500/8000 tri-pak covers all three mounting positions with a single arm package — installer selects at installation.

Common Norton Door Controls Repair Scenarios

  • Norton 7500 / 8000 closing too slowly or too fast — main-speed and latch-speed adjustment valves. Norton's valves are staked (factory-sealed) on modern units to prevent tampering, so adjustment requires the correct Norton tool. On-site adjustment in under 15 minutes.
  • Oil leaking from closer body — internal seal failure. On a current-production 8000 or 7500 under warranty, ASSA ABLOY covers cylinder replacement. Out of warranty, we typically quote full closer replacement since the cylinder cost approaches new-unit price.
  • Hold-open arm (7500H / 8000H) won't hold — the hold-open loop assembly (Norton 7701-13) breaks at the cast-iron piece attached to the disk. Common failure — we stock this part. Also fits Yale 400-13 position.
  • CLP8000 CloserPlus stop not engaging at full open — stop adjustment on the arm needs setting, or the internal stop mechanism has worn. Usually an adjustment fix.
  • Parallel arm bracket loose or pulled from frame — Norton 1618A bracket (also used as Yale 289A) replacement. Upgrade to through-bolt mounting on high-abuse doors.
  • Security closer (7570) fastener tampering — Torx thread-locked fasteners are intentionally non-standard. If arm is being tampered with, verify Torx screws are still thread-locked and report the attempted breach — security closers are specifically selected for tamper evidence.
  • 7900 OHCC not closing (concealed closer) — frame head must be accessed to diagnose and adjust. If the closer body has failed internally, full-unit replacement is typical since rebuilding concealed closers is rarely cost-effective.
  • 7700 Power Track door holder won't release on fire alarm — track electromagnet, fire alarm signal to track, or power supply. Sequential diagnosis required; verify fire alarm system is passing correct signal.
  • Arm cross-compatibility with Yale — if your building has mixed Norton/Yale closers, we can source arm parts between the two brands for faster repairs. Norton 7701-3 = Yale 400-3 hold-open arm; Norton 1618A = Yale 289A parallel bracket; same shoe assemblies across both brands.
  • Closer fails NFPA 80 inspection — door not closing and latching on every cycle. Valve adjustment, spring-force adjustment, or full closer replacement depending on root cause.

Automation & Access Control Integration

  • CLP8000 CloserPlus integrated stop + hold — single-arm solution for doors that need both a dead-stop at full open AND friction hold-open. LCN requires HCUSH for this; Norton does it standard in CLP8000.
  • 7700 Series Power Track — electromechanical hold-open integrated into a closer/track assembly. Single-point electric hold, releases on fire alarm activation. Code-compliant alternative to fusible-link hold-open for fire-rated doors.
  • ADA-compliant spring sizing — 7500 and 8000 multi-size cylinders adjust to ADA opening force (5 lbf interior, 8.5 lbf exterior) through size adjustment. No closer replacement required for ADA retrofits in most cases.
  • Electric hold-open integration — Norton closers pair with separate magnetic hold-open devices that tie to fire alarm for classic fire-door hold-open applications. Releases automatically on fire alarm.
  • Access control integration — When paired with electric strikes or electrified panic devices, Norton closers complete the access-controlled opening. Compatible with PDK.io cloud access control and traditional card systems.
  • Auto operator pairing — Norton Rixson also makes the Besam and Record auto operators under the broader ASSA ABLOY architectural hardware umbrella. Norton closers coordinate cleanly with those operators for ADA-accessible entries.

Fire Rating & Code Compliance

  • Norton 8000, 7500, 7570, 1600, and 9300 Series are all UL-listed for self-closing fire-rated doors.
  • ANSI/BHMA A156.4 Grade 1 certification on 7500 and 8000 — meets or exceeds all commercial fire-rated door closer requirements.
  • Fire-rated doors require the closer to close and latch fully on every cycle (NFPA 80). Fusible link hold-open is typically not used on modern Norton installs — the 7700 Power Track provides the better code-compliant hold-open solution via fire alarm integration.
  • 7570 Security Closer is listed for detention and psychiatric applications — specifically designed to meet security-facility code requirements without sacrificing fire-door compliance.
  • 7900 and 7970 OHCC (concealed) are UL-listed for fire-rated door assemblies — concealment does not compromise fire rating when installed per specification.
  • ADA opening force: 5 lbf interior / 8.5 lbf exterior. Multi-size 7500/8000 cylinders adjust to ADA levels without closer replacement.
  • Norton/Yale arm cross-compatibility is listed on spec sheets — replacement parts don't void certifications when OEM parts are used across the compatible product families.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is "Norton Door Controls" the same as "Norton Rixson"?

Yes — same company, ASSA ABLOY now markets the combined product line as Norton Rixson (Norton door controls + Rixson concealed closers under one brand umbrella). Older installations and distributor catalogs still say "Norton Door Controls" — same products, same parts. When ordering parts or new units, "Norton Rixson" is the current official name, but distributors honor both.

How does Norton 8000 compare to LCN 4040XP?

Both are Grade 1 heavy-duty institutional workhorses. Functionally equivalent. Differences: LCN has the Green Dial spring-force indicator (foolproof adjustment) and a 30-year warranty on 4040XP. Norton 8000 has the CLP8000 CloserPlus arm (integrated stop + hold in one arm — LCN splits those into CUSH and HW options), a dedicated security closer line (7570), and is often priced slightly below LCN for equivalent spec. For new installs we typically recommend LCN unless the building is already standardized on ASSA ABLOY hardware, in which case Norton keeps the ecosystem consistent.

What is the 7500 Tri-Pak and how does it work?

The Norton 7500 Tri-Pak is a multi-mount arm package shipped standard with 7500 and 8000 Series closers. One package covers three mounting configurations — pull-side regular arm, push-side top-jamb, or push-side parallel arm — and the installer selects the configuration at install time based on door condition and code requirements. This gives single-SKU flexibility equivalent to LCN's RwPA tri-pack. Combined with multi-size adjustment (sizes 1-6 from a single cylinder), it dramatically reduces inventory requirements for multi-building property managers.

When should I spec the 7570 Security Closer instead of a standard 7500?

Use 7570 anywhere the closer will be accessible to the general public in a facility with security or tamper concerns — detention, correctional, psychiatric, vandal-prone schools, and industrial environments with aggressive abuse. The 7570 uses fixed-link arms (can't be disassembled), permanent joint connections (orbital-riveted elbows), soffit joints (no screws visible at joint), and Torx thread-locked fasteners on every exposed screw. A standard 7500 uses standard fasteners that can be unscrewed by anyone with the right tool. For a typical office, retail, or institutional building, standard 7500 is sufficient; 7570 is a targeted spec for known-risk environments.

Can I swap Norton arm parts with Yale arm parts?

Yes, for most arm components. Norton (ASSA ABLOY) and Yale (ASSA ABLOY) share arm engineering across the 1600/9300/7500/8000 (Norton) and 50/2300/3000/4400 (Yale) product families. Common cross-references: Norton 7701-3 hold-open arm = Yale 400-3; Norton 1618A parallel bracket = Yale 289A; Norton shoe assembly fits Yale 50/2300/3000/4400. This is a real service advantage for buildings with mixed Norton/Yale closers — we can source from whichever brand has parts in stock locally, faster return to service. Does not apply to CLP8000, UNI8000, or 8000-series-specific arms — those are Norton-only.

My Norton 7500 hold-open won't hold the door anymore.

Most likely the hold-open loop assembly (Norton 7701-13) has broken — specifically the cast-iron piece attached to the disk. This is the single most common Norton failure we see on 7500/8000/9300/1600 hold-open closers, and also the Yale equivalent (Yale 400-13). We carry this part for same-visit repair. If the loop assembly is intact, the friction adjustment on the main hex bolt may just need tightening.

Do you service Norton 7900 overhead concealed closers?

Yes. The 7900 closer body and slide track mount inside the frame head — invisible from both sides of the door except for the one-piece arm. Service requires frame access (usually the transom/header must be opened). We diagnose valve and fluid issues on-site; full-unit replacements are scheduled because the frame work takes longer than surface closer swaps. For security-critical applications, the 7970 Security OHCC variant uses tamper-resistant construction.

Is the 7700 Power Track the same as a magnetic hold-open?

Similar concept, different mechanism. A traditional magnetic hold-open is a separate wall-mounted electromagnet that holds the door open at a fixed point and releases on fire alarm. The 7700 Power Track integrates a single-point electromechanical holder directly into a track-mounted closer — one unit, not two, and the track allows a little more flexibility on where the door holds. Both are code-compliant alternatives to fusible-link hold-open for fire-rated doors. 7700 is cleaner install, magnetic is usually cheaper for retrofits.

What about the 1600 Series — is it worth spec'ing on new projects?

Rarely for new construction. The 1600 is Norton's budget tier and was originally designed for the low-frequency interior and storefront market — but modern value-tier alternatives (Falcon SC60A, LCN 1250) offer similar performance at better price points, and LCN 1250 is specifically engineered as a drop-in replacement for the 1600 mounting pattern. For existing Norton 1600 installations with functional arms and brackets, straight replacement with 1600 makes sense (no re-drilling). For new low-traffic doors, we typically recommend a newer budget closer.
