Schlage ND Series Commercial Locks
Allegion's flagship Grade 1 cylindrical lock — tested to 16 million cycles, 3,100 in-lb abusive lever torque (2.5× the Grade 1 standard), UL 3-hour fire rated, and Miami-Dade + Florida Building Code approved. The most-specified commercial cylindrical lock in the United States.
Parent company: Allegion
About Schlage ND Series
The Schlage ND Series is Allegion's top-of-the-line cylindrical lock and widely considered the default spec for commercial construction in the United States. Every ND exceeds ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1 and is UL Listed for 3-hour A-label fire doors. The chassis is cold-rolled steel, corrosion-treated, with a key-removable outside knob/lever for faster cylinder replacement — a feature unique to the ND that saves 15-20 minutes per cylinder change in the field.
Testing is where the ND stands apart. Schlage's independent lab testing has the ND surviving 16 million cycles without failure (20× the Grade 1 requirement of 800K). Abusive lever torque resistance is tested at 3,100 in-lb — 2.5× the Grade 1 standard. Offset lever pull resistance is rated at 1,600 lb, which defeats typical pry bar attacks on commercial storefronts. For Florida-specific specification, the ND is Miami-Dade Product Control approved at ±80 PSF (singles) / ±50 PSF (doubles) with 3/4" latch throw.
The ND offers 24 mechanical functions and 7 electrified variants, 5 lever designs (Athens, Rhodes, Tubular, Sparta, Omega), and 2 rose designs. The VANDLGARD option adds a breakaway clutch that disengages the outside spindle from the latch when locked — eliminating lever droop and kick-damage on high-abuse openings. Keying runs from standard Everest C123 all the way to Primus XP (geographically-exclusive dealer-restricted). The ND also accepts SFIC and LFIC (Schlage FSIC) cores, plus 10 non-Schlage cylinder formats including Best, Corbin Russwin, Medeco, Sargent, and Yale — making it one of the most keyway-flexible commercial locks in the category. Key-En-Lock is a factory-authorized Schlage dealer and services the full ND lineup across Brevard County.

- Miami-Dade Product Control approved with "WS" option — request at order.
- Florida Building Code approved at ±80 PSF (single doors) / ±50 PSF (double doors) with 3/4" latch throw.
- Non-handed — field-reversible without disassembly.
- Electrified variants (ND80PDEL/ND80PDEU) retain UL fire rating when wired per Schlage spec.
- Verify UL label and strike alignment during annual NFPA 80 fire door inspection.
Common Schlage ND Series Repairs We Service
After 25+ years of commercial locksmith work in Brevard County, these are the failure modes we see most often on Schlage ND Series cylindrical locks. All are truck-serviceable — we don't need to remove the door or send hardware to a shop.
- Lever sag / spring return failure — worn return spring after 5-7 years heavy use. On-site spring kit replacement without removing lock from door.
- Cylinder binding / key won't turn — cam alignment drift or retainer loose. Cam re-positioning on-site.
- Key-removable knob stuck — ND-specific issue where the key-removable outside knob retaining mechanism jams. Quick fix with proper Schlage removal tool.
- Latchbolt won't retract on lever press — drive cam worn or hub slipping. Lockbody rebuild with Schlage OEM kit.
- ND80PDEL electrified not releasing — solenoid failure, voltage drop from long wire run, or access control relay issue.
- VANDLGARD clutch not engaging — clutch mechanism wear or debris in rose. Clean + re-grease or clutch replacement.

Why is the Schlage ND the most-specified commercial cylindrical lock?
Three reasons. First, the ND survives 16 million cycles in independent lab testing — 20× the Grade 1 requirement. Second, it accepts 10 non-Schlage cylinder formats (Best, Corbin Russwin, Medeco, Sargent, Yale) so you can master-key it into almost any existing building regardless of which brand is already installed. Third, Schlage's dealer and parts network is the deepest in North America — any commercial locksmith stocks ND parts. For architects and facility managers, this translates to "spec this and it'll work anywhere, last decades, and be serviceable by anyone."
What's the difference between ND53PD, ND70PD, ND75PD, and ND80PD?
These are the four most-common ND models and represent the core commercial function set. ND53PD (F82 entrance/office) — key outside, push-button inside, standard commercial office entry. ND70PD (F84 classroom) — key outside, inside always free, pre-2015 classroom spec. ND75PD (F110 classroom security) — key in EITHER lever locks or unlocks outside, teacher can lock from inside during lockdown. Current K-12 spec. ND80PD (F86 storeroom) — outside always locked except by key, inside always free. Server rooms, utility, IT closets. If you're only stocking one ND model for a general office portfolio, stock ND53PD.
Is ND75PD code-compliant for Florida K-12 classroom security?
Yes. The ND75PD (F110 classroom security) meets current Florida school hardware requirements for classroom doors. Key from either side locks or unlocks the outside lever — so a teacher can lock their classroom from inside during a lockdown without opening the door. Inside lever is always free for egress (NFPA 101 compliant). UL 3-hour fire rating when installed on fire-rated classroom doors. We've installed ND75PD across multiple Brevard County K-12 schools and private academies.
What does VANDLGARD do and is it worth the upgrade?
VANDLGARD is a Schlage feature that adds a breakaway clutch between the outside lever and the internal lock mechanism. When someone kicks, hangs on, or stands on the outside lever to force entry, the lever rotates freely without transmitting force to the lockbody — preventing bent levers, sheared spindles, and damaged cams. For school exterior doors, public restroom exits, retail back doors, and anywhere you see repeat vandalism, VANDLGARD is worth it. Standard ND lockbody lifespan is 15 years; VANDLGARD versions running in abuse environments can run 20+ years because the failure mode (lever damage cascading to internal damage) is eliminated. Retrofittable to existing ND locks via kit — 30-minute install per door.
Can the ND80PDEL work with PDK.io or other access control?
Yes. The ND80PDEL (fail-safe) and ND80PDEU (fail-secure) work with any standard 12V or 24V DC access control including PDK.io, Openpath, Brivo, S2, Genetec, LenelS2, Honeywell Pro-Watch, Kantech, CCure, and proprietary systems. Add RX (Request-to-Exit) for egress logging and LX latchbolt monitor for closed-door confirmation — critical for DEA-controlled pharmacy and IT rooms. We install, run low-voltage wiring, and hand off to your access control vendor — or handle end-to-end through our PDK.io dealer authorization.
How does the ND Series compare to the L9000 mortise lock?
The L9000 mortise and the ND cylindrical are both Schlage Grade 1, but they're different product categories for different door types. L9000 has 40+ functions, an integrated 1" deadbolt, and 15-20+ year service life — spec'd for high-traffic entry doors, institutional, multi-family corridors. ND has 24 functions, no integrated deadbolt, and 10-15 year service life — spec'd for most other commercial doors (offices, classrooms, retail, interior). Rule of thumb: entry doors and high-abuse openings → L9000. Everything else → ND. Both share the Everest C123 keyway and Primus XP upgrade, so they master-key together cleanly.
Is the ND really 16 million cycles? That sounds exaggerated.
Independently verified by Schlage in controlled lab testing. For context: a commercial door cycling 200 times per day (retail, school classroom) hits 800K cycles — the Grade 1 minimum — in about 11 years. At 16M cycles, the ND could run that same 200-times-daily use for over 200 years before reaching its tested failure point. Real-world commercial installations routinely show ND locks operational after 20-30 years with only cylinder and spring service. The cycle number isn't marketing — it's the reason specifiers default to the ND.
