Lock Rekeying Services — Residential, Commercial & Automotive
Rekeying changes your lock's internal pins so old keys stop working and new keys take over. Same hardware, new security. Standard $20 per cylinder on Schlage, Kwikset, Yale, Sargent, Corbin Russwin, and most residential and commercial locks. Mobile service throughout Brevard County, FL.
Which Do You Actually Need?
Both options restore your security. The right choice depends on the condition of your existing hardware. In most cases rekeying is faster, cheaper, and just as effective.
✅ Rekey — Best When:
- Lock hardware is in good working condition
- You just want new keys and old keys to stop working
- Multiple locks need to match one key
- Budget or turnaround time matter
- Restricted or high-security cylinders are already installed
🔧 Replace — Best When:
- Locks are worn, sticking, or physically damaged
- You want a security upgrade (smart lock, high-security cylinder)
- Adding hardware where none exists (e.g. new deadbolt)
- Hardware is an older, low-quality model
- Switching to keypad or electronic entry
Not sure which you need? We assess your locks on-site and give you an honest recommendation. If a repair or rekey will last, that's what we quote. See our change locks vs rekey guide or learn about full lock replacement.
Common Reasons to Rekey Your Locks
Moving Into a New Home
You don't know who has copies — previous owners, realtors, contractors, cleaners. Rekey before you unpack.
Lost or Stolen Keys
Someone may have found your keys and noted the address on them. Rekey the same day you realize they're missing.
After a Breakup or Separation
An ex or former housemate still has a working key. Rekeying is fast, inexpensive, and immediate.
Employee or Tenant Turnover
Former staff or tenants shouldn't retain access. Rekey the same day for immediate security.
After a Break-In
Even if the intruder didn't take your keys, rekey after any security incident to restore confidence in your hardware.
Routine Security Reset
Best practice every few years, especially for rental properties, vacation rentals, and businesses with any regular turnover.

Commercial Rekeying & Master Key Systems
Commercial buildings require more planning than a residential rekey. Entry doors, suite doors, storage rooms, IDF closets, and maintenance access may all need to work together in a keyed hierarchy. We design and install master key systems from a clean slate, or rekey an existing system when staff turn over or a key goes missing.

Automotive Rekeying — Ignition, Door, and Trunk Cylinders
Car locks can be rekeyed too. If you bought a used vehicle, lost a key, or had a break-in, we can rekey the car's existing lock cylinders so old keys stop working — just like a home rekey, but for your vehicle. Automotive rekeying covers ignition cylinders, door cylinders, trunk cylinders, and glove box locks on most domestic and foreign vehicles from the early 2000s forward.
- Ignition cylinder rekey — matches a new key to your ignition; often paired with ignition repair when the cylinder is worn
- Door and trunk cylinder rekey — on-site for most Ford, GM, Chrysler, Toyota, Honda, Nissan platforms
- New mechanical key cut to the new code — often paired with transponder key programming if equipped
- Key fob re-pair or replacement — see key fob programming
- Push-to-start vehicles — rekey replaced by proximity key reprogramming; old smart keys invalidated at the ECU

Restricted Keyway and UL437 Rekeying
Existing high-security or restricted keyway cylinders don't need to be replaced when keys change hands. They rekey using the same principles as standard locks — what's different is the key blank supply, which stays dealer-controlled.
MX, Medeco, and Mul-T-Lock Rekey Service
We're an authorized dealer for three major restricted and high-security platforms, which means we can legitimately supply, cut, and rekey keys for each one. Each system uses a different cylinder design and key control model:
- MX Locks restricted keyway — standard Schlage pin stacks inside, patented restricted blanks. Standard $20/cylinder rekey with any competent locksmith; new blanks only from authorized dealers.
- Medeco M4 / M3 / BiLevel — UL437-certified high-security cylinders with angled pin cuts. Rekey requires Medeco-specific pinning and cutting equipment.
- Mul-T-Lock MT5+ and Interactive+ — UL437-certified telescopic-pin cylinders. Rekey and key control documentation requires dealer authorization.
If you don't currently have restricted hardware and want to upgrade during a rekey, we can retrofit restricted cylinders into your existing Schlage, Yale, Sargent, or Corbin Russwin housings without replacing the full lockset.

Smart Lock Code Reset & User Management
For smart and keypad locks, rekeying usually means resetting access codes rather than swapping pins. The goal is the same — old credentials stop working, new ones take over. For locks with both a keypad and a physical key backup, we can rekey the mechanical cylinder at the same time.
- Lockly Secure Plus / Vision / Visage — reset PIN codes, fingerprints, app access; rekey the mechanical override cylinder
- Yale Assure / Assure 2 — reset user codes, factory reset, app re-provisioning
- Schlage Encode / Sense / BE469 keypad — delete old codes, reprogram master code, rekey mechanical backup
- Kwikset Halo / Aura / Kevo — SmartKey rekey on the mechanical side plus app/code reset
- August / Level / Wyze — user credential reset via the app
Worth noting: if an ex-user had the Lockly or Yale app paired to your lock, simply changing the keypad PIN isn't enough — we do a full factory reset and re-provision so no old app sessions retain access.

Lock Rekeying FAQ
How much does it cost to rekey a lock?
Our standard residential rekey rate is $20 per cylinder on Schlage, Kwikset, Yale, Sargent, and most common brands. A typical 4-cylinder home rekey runs around $80 plus a mobile service fee. High-security cylinders (Medeco, Mul-T-Lock) and restricted keyways are priced per the specific platform.
How long does rekeying take?
A standard home with 3 to 5 cylinders is typically rekeyed in 30 to 60 minutes. A small commercial office may take 1 to 2 hours. Master key system design for a larger building is scheduled separately.
Can you rekey a car's ignition and door locks?
Yes. Automotive rekeying covers ignition, door, and trunk cylinders on most vehicles from the early 2000s forward. For push-to-start vehicles, the equivalent of rekeying is a proximity key reprogramming that invalidates old smart keys at the vehicle's computer. See our automotive locksmith page for more.
Do I need the original key to rekey?
No. If you've lost your only key, we can pick or bypass the lock first, then rekey it. This is common after a lockout or lost-key situation — we can do both in a single visit.
Can you rekey all my locks to a single key?
Yes. This is called key-alike and it's one of our most common residential requests. No added labor cost when done as part of a whole-house rekey. Just mention it when you call.
Is rekeying as secure as installing new locks?
Yes, assuming your existing hardware is in good condition. The key pins are replaced with a new combination, and the security rating of the cylinder stays identical — only which key works changes. If your hardware is worn or damaged, full replacement is the better call.
Can any locksmith rekey restricted or high-security locks?
For MX Locks restricted keyway, any competent locksmith can rekey because the pin stacks are standard Schlage depth — only the blanks are restricted. For Medeco and Mul-T-Lock, rekeying requires platform-specific pinning kits and cutters, plus authorized dealer credentials for legitimate blank supply. We're authorized on all three platforms.
What if the previous owner gave me the keys — do I still need to rekey?
Yes, strongly recommended. You have no way to know how many copies are circulating — real estate agents, contractors, cleaners, previous tenants, family members. A rekey resets the count to zero and gives you full control over who has access.
Can you rekey and extract a broken key in the same visit?
Yes. We extract broken keys non-destructively first, then rekey the cylinder so the broken key's copies (if any) also stop working. Both in one visit.
