Von Duprin Panic Hardware & Exit Devices

Industry-standard Grade 1 commercial panic hardware. Authorized service for Von Duprin 99, 98, XP98/99, 33A, 35A, 8800, 22, 9927/9827, 6000 electric strikes, CHEXIT delayed egress (CX), RCM, DE5300, ALK alarm kits, and 2670 GUARD-X alarmed exit devices across Brevard County.

About Von Duprin (Allegion)

Von Duprin is the gold standard of commercial panic hardware, owned by Allegion and used in the majority of institutional, government, school, and serious commercial buildings across the United States. The name is so dominant that architects routinely write their specifications as "Von Duprin 99 Series or equal" regardless of what gets installed.

Key-En-Lock installs, repairs, and services the full Von Duprin product line across Brevard County — mechanical 99/98/33A/35A/8800/22 series, electrified (EL/QEL/6000-series strikes), and the CHEXIT delayed egress / RCM / DE5300 / ALK alarm kit family for applications that need controlled or alarmed egress (retail loss prevention, behavioral health, memory care, maternity infant protection). Because Allegion stocks Von Duprin parts through a mature supply chain, most Von Duprin repairs can be completed on the first visit — we carry push pads, latch bolts, strikes, springs, and end caps on the truck.

Von Duprin devices are built to be serviced in the field — which is why buildings that have been running the same 99 Series for 25 years are still running them. The chassis outlives most buildings; only the wear parts need attention.

Available Trims & Lever Options

The trim is the outside hardware attached to the exit device — the lever, pull, thumbpiece, or knob that determines how the door opens from the outside when unlocked. Inside remains the panic bar (for code-compliant free egress). Below are the standard trim options available for Von Duprin exit devices:

Trim Code Type Function Description
996L Lever trim Night latch / classroom Keyed lever — most common Von Duprin trim. Outside lever retracts latch when unlocked.
996L-NL Night latch lever Key locks/unlocks outside Classroom-style — key controls whether outside lever operates.
996L-NL-OP Night latch, office Office function Outside lever is always locked; key retracts latch only for entry.
996L-BE Lever w/ blank escutcheon No cylinder Outside lever with a blank plate — no outside key access at all.
996L-F Fire-rated lever trim Fire-rated UL-listed fire-rated version of the 996L lever trim for rated doors.
06 Thumbpiece trim Key retracts latch Classic commercial thumbpiece with key cylinder — common on storefront and retail.
15 Pull trim w/ cylinder Key retracts latch Fixed pull handle with key cylinder — handle does not move, key retracts latch.
17 Pull trim, no cylinder Dummy / exit only outside Fixed pull with no key — door is exit only from the outside (no entry).
18 Thumbpiece + pull Key retracts latch Combination thumbpiece and pull handle — traditional commercial entry.
EO Exit only No outside trim No outside hardware at all. Exit only — entry blocked from outside.
DT Dummy trim Aesthetic only Dummy pull or lever for matching aesthetics — no function, exit only.
210DT Pull trim for GUARD-X Exterior GUARD-X operation Pull trim used with 2670 GUARD-X + outside rim cylinder when building owner needs to arm/disarm and enter from outside.

Common Von Duprin Repairs

  • Push pad slow to return — worn internal cam or return spring. On-site rebuild with replacement spring kit.
  • Latch not retracting fully — typically a worn latch bolt spring or misaligned strike. Adjusted or replaced on-site.
  • Dogging won't hold retracted — worn dogging cam or failed hex-dog mechanism. Internal part replacement.
  • End cap loose or missing — OEM end cap replacement, 5-minute fix.
  • Strike damage from repeated impact — rim strike replacement, often with reinforcement plate for heavy-traffic doors.
  • Electric latch retraction motor failure — 9900 series motor replacement. Also check power supply output.
  • Trim cylinder worn or failing — Schlage Primus, Everest, or standard cylinders serviced or rekeyed without removing the device.
  • CHEXIT alarm won't silence after authorized exit — inhibit input wiring fault, bad key-switch reset, or inhibit time-out misconfigured. Diagnose on-site without removing the device.
  • CHEXIT not releasing after 15-second delay — blocking actuator failure (motor-driven on post-2015 units) or control module fault. Field-serviceable with CHEXIT module replacement.
  • CHEXIT nuisance alarm triggering without bar press — sensor or micro-switch fault, often recalibrated via onboard switches without parts.
  • ALK alarm kit horn stuck sounding — dead backup battery, stuck contact, or blown horn. Battery first, then switch, then horn.
  • DE5300 mag lock not releasing on exit — RX-LX exit device signal, control box relay, or mag lock coil. Sequential diagnosis.
  • GUARD-X 2670 alarm won't sound when door is pushed — dead 9V battery (most common — replace annually), or internal alarm module failure. Battery first, then module swap.
  • GUARD-X 2670 alarm sounding continuously after authorized exit — this is actually by design. The non-relatching deadbolt means the alarm continues until disarmed by key. If the key won't silence it, the rim cylinder or internal reset mechanism needs service.
  • GUARD-X armed indicator light not working — low battery (replace 9V) or indicator LED failure. Battery is usually the fix.
  • GUARD-X mounted on wrong hand door — non-issue. 2670 is non-handed by design — reverse the "Emergency Exit — Alarm Will Sound" signage and the device works either way.
  • GUARD-X rim cylinder key worn or lost — standard rim cylinder (often Schlage SC-1) rekey or replacement. Does not require removing the device.

Electrification & Access Control Integration

Adding electric latch retraction (EL) or other electrification options turns mechanical Von Duprin devices into access-control-capable entrances. Exit remains code-compliant free egress from the inside, but outside entry becomes scheduled, credentialed, or automated. See our full electrification overview on the main panic hardware page.

  • 99EL / 98EL — Electric latch retraction versions of 99 and 98 series. Motor inside the device retracts the latch on command from a card reader, keypad, or schedule.
  • QEL (Quiet Electric Latch) — Newer generation with a much quieter retraction motor. Important for office, medical, and library environments where noise matters.
  • 33A-EL / 35A-EL — Narrow-stile EL versions for aluminum storefront doors.
  • Request-to-Exit (RX) switch — Detects push bar activation for access control logging and door contact bypass.
  • Latch monitoring switch (LX) — Confirms latch is fully extended (door is secure).
  • Fire alarm release — Wiring into the fire alarm control panel for automatic unlock on alarm activation.
  • CHEXIT (CX) Delayed Egress — Integrated 15-second delay with local alarm, immediate fire-alarm release, configurable nuisance delay and rearm time. Self-contained electronics in the device. Meets IBC 1010.1.9.7 and NFPA 101 7.2.1.6. Power supply options PS902 (1 device), PS904 (3 devices), PS906 (4 devices), PS914 (4 devices).
  • RCM (Remote CHEXIT Module) — CHEXIT electronics in a separate wall-mounted control box for smaller doors or retrofits.
  • DE5300 — Narrow-stile delayed egress using RX-LX exit device + CHEXIT control box + Schlage direct-hold electromagnetic lock.
  • ALK Alarm Kit — Local audible alarm accessory for standard 98/99 — add alarmed egress to existing devices without replacement.
  • CON (Allegion Connect) — Common connector system linking exit device, trim, power transfer, and power supply for cleaner installs.

Fire-Rated Options & Code Compliance

  • All 99, 98, 33A, 35A, 8800, and 22 series have UL-listed fire-rated variants.
  • Fire-rated Von Duprin devices cannot be dogged (held retracted) — the latch must engage whenever the door closes.
  • UL label must be intact on device — a painted-over or damaged UL label fails inspection even if the hardware is compliant.
  • Fire-rated trim (996L-F, etc.) must be paired with the fire-rated chassis — mixing rated and non-rated components voids the UL listing.

All Von Duprin fire-rated exit devices must be installed and maintained in accordance with NFPA 101 and the Florida Building Code. We install inspection-ready — meaning it passes the fire marshal the first time.

Von Duprin FAQ

Can I convert my existing Von Duprin 99 to electric latch retraction?

Usually yes. The Von Duprin 99EL conversion kit replaces the internal chassis module — the push bar, rail, end caps, and mounting stay in place. It's significantly cheaper than replacing the whole device. We evaluate on-site to confirm the existing chassis is in good enough condition to justify the conversion.

What's the difference between 99 and 98 series?

Both are Grade 1. The 99 is specified for heavier-duty, higher-cycle applications — schools, hospitals, transit. The 98 is lighter-duty but uses the same quality platform — professional offices, smaller retail, light commercial. For most Brevard County commercial buildings, a 98 is sufficient and saves budget; for high-traffic environments, 99 is worth the upgrade.

My Von Duprin trim lever is loose — is that a repair or replacement?

Almost always a repair. The lever mounting screws or internal setscrew can work loose over time. We tighten, thread-lock, and verify function on-site. If the lever itself is damaged (bent, broken return spring), the trim is replaceable without removing the exit device chassis.

Do you stock Von Duprin parts?

Yes. We carry push pads, latch bolts, rim strikes, end caps, and common trims on the truck for same-visit repairs on 99, 98, 33A, and 35A series. Less common parts (8800 series internals, specific fire-rated trims, CHEXIT control modules, ALK alarm kits) are sourced through Allegion and typically arrive within 2–5 business days.

What finishes can you get Von Duprin in?

The full BHMA finish range: 605 (bright brass), 612 (satin bronze), 613 (oil-rubbed bronze), 625 (bright chrome), 626 (satin chrome), 628/630 (satin aluminum/stainless), 689 (aluminum painted), 690 (dark bronze painted). Most commercial Florida installs are 626, 630, or 613. Lead times vary — common finishes ship fast, unusual finishes can take 4–6 weeks.

What is Von Duprin CHEXIT and how is it different from a standard 99?

CHEXIT (CX) is Von Duprin's delayed egress option — available as a factory-built variant on 98/99, XP98/99, and 33A/35A series. Functionally it's a standard Von Duprin panic device with integrated electronics that hold the door secure for 15 seconds after someone pushes the bar, while sounding a local alarm. The door releases immediately on fire alarm activation (code-required), after the 15-second delay expires, or on power loss. Common applications: behavioral health facilities (preventing patient elopement), memory care units, maternity wards (infant abduction protection), and retail loss prevention. CHEXIT meets IBC 1010.1.9.7 Delayed Egress and NFPA 101 7.2.1.6 Special Locking Arrangements. Example part number: CXA99EO (CHEXIT with 99 chassis, exit only).

How does Von Duprin CHEXIT compare to Detex 10 Series delayed egress?

Both meet the same code requirements (IBC 1010.1.9.7, NFPA 101 7.2.1.6) and both provide 15-second delayed egress with alarm and fire-release. Differences: CHEXIT is factory-integrated into the Von Duprin 98/99/33A/35A chassis — if your building already runs Von Duprin, CHEXIT keeps you in one parts ecosystem. Detex 10 Series is a standalone device family — if the rest of your building is Detex or mixed-brand, Detex fits better. CHEXIT's RCM variant (Remote CHEXIT Module) and DE5300 (using a Schlage mag lock) give more flexibility for compact installs than Detex typically offers. Both are legitimate code-compliant choices; brand consistency across a building usually drives the decision.

What's the difference between CHEXIT, RCM, and DE5300?

All three provide Von Duprin delayed egress functionality, but differ in how they package it. CHEXIT (CX): all electronics self-contained inside the exit device — the cleanest install. RCM (Remote CHEXIT Module): CHEXIT electronics in a separate wall-mounted control box next to the door — useful when space inside the exit device is tight or for retrofits. DE5300: CHEXIT control box + an RX-LX low-current exit device + a Schlage direct-hold electromagnetic lock — used on narrow-stile doors where the standard CHEXIT chassis won't fit. All three can be configured for controlled-egress or delayed-egress applications and all release on fire alarm.

Can I add a local alarm to my existing Von Duprin 99 without replacing it?

Yes — the Von Duprin ALK (Alarm Kit) is designed exactly for this. It's a field-installable alarm accessory that mounts on standard 98/99 devices and sounds a local horn on unauthorized opening. It's the equivalent of Detex's EAX-500 retrofit alarm but engineered specifically for Von Duprin chassis. Common on emergency-only exits at retail stores, schools, and warehouses where you want to keep the existing compliant exit device but add loss-prevention alarm coverage.

What is the Von Duprin 2670 GUARD-X and when should I use it?

The 2670 GUARD-X is a standalone alarmed exit device — an exit alarm lock built as a complete unit, not a retrofit. It's the Von Duprin answer to the Detex ECL-230. Use it on secondary emergency exits where you want a compliant egress point that sounds a 100dB alarm the moment someone pushes it. Common applications: the back door at a retail store (loss prevention deterrent), restaurant secondary exits, drug store emergency exits, sporting goods loss-prevention doors. Features: UL305 panic hardware, ANSI A156.3 Grade 1 (250,000 cycles), non-handed, stainless steel deadbolt rated to 1,600 lbs, 9V battery-powered (no wiring required), English+Braille signage built in, non-relatching deadbolt (alarm continues until disarmed by key), armed indicator light. Takes a standard rim cylinder (sold separately — typically Schlage SC-1).

What does SP28 mean on a 2670 GUARD-X part number?

SP28 is the Von Duprin finish code for Satin Aluminum on the GUARD-X series (equivalent to US28 / BHMA 628 on other Von Duprin products). The 2670 GUARD-X comes in three standard finishes: SP28 (satin aluminum — most common on commercial storefront and retail applications), 313 (dark bronze), and 315 (black). If you're matching finish to existing Von Duprin 99s on your primary entries running 626 satin chrome, the GUARD-X SP28 is visually close but not a perfect match — it's a natural-metal anodized look rather than a polished chrome. For retail back-door applications where the GUARD-X is not adjacent to primary entries, SP28 is the right default spec.

What's the difference between GUARD-X 2670, ALK alarm kit, and CHEXIT?

Three distinct Von Duprin products for different needs. GUARD-X 2670: standalone alarmed exit device (you replace the entire panic hardware on the secondary exit) — immediate alarm on push, not a delayed egress. ALK Alarm Kit: retrofit accessory that bolts onto an existing 98/99 to add local alarm — keeps your existing compliant exit device. CHEXIT (CX): delayed egress option integrated into 98/99/33A/35A — holds the door for 15 seconds while an alarm sounds, then releases (for behavioral health, memory care, retail loss prevention where you want actual delay, not just alarm). ALK and GUARD-X both sound the alarm immediately; CHEXIT delays the exit itself. Choose based on whether you want delay (CHEXIT), alarm-only retrofit (ALK), or a complete standalone alarmed device (GUARD-X).

How often does the GUARD-X 9V battery need replacement?

At minimum annually, same as Detex alarm devices. The 9V alkaline battery drifts downward over time even without alarm activation. A dead battery means the alarm won't sound when someone opens the door — defeating the purpose of the device. For retail customers with multiple GUARD-X units, we offer scheduled annual battery service as part of a maintenance contract. Each visit we also verify the armed indicator light, test the key reset function, and confirm the non-relatching deadbolt mechanism is working correctly.
