Yale (ASSA ABLOY ACCENTRA) Door Closers

Yale Commercial door closers — now officially marketed as ASSA ABLOY ACCENTRA. Authorized service across Brevard County for the 4400 Institutional Series (Grade 1 flagship, formerly 400), 3301 / 3501 narrow-stile, 1900 historical landmark, and legacy SC400 / SC4400 security closer (discontinued but still serviced on existing installations).

Parent company: ASSA ABLOY (rebranded Yale Commercial → ACCENTRA)

About Yale (ASSA ABLOY ACCENTRA)

Yale Commercial door hardware — including the closer lineup — has been rebranded to ASSA ABLOY ACCENTRA as of ASSA ABLOY's North American portfolio consolidation. Current production units ship as "ASSA ABLOY ACCENTRA 4400 (formerly Yale 4400)" — same product, same mounting patterns, same parts compatibility, different label. Older buildings running "Yale 4400" or "Yale 400" series closers receive identical service — we work on both pre-rebrand Yale units and current Accentra production.

Yale's commercial closer heritage goes back to the 1940s (the 1900 Series was the original). The modern workhorse is the 4400 Series Institutional — ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, UL-listed, sizes 1-6 in a single adjustable cylinder, non-handed, multi-mount (push/pull/top-jamb from the same unit). It's the direct equivalent of LCN 4040XP and Norton 8000 in the ASSA ABLOY ecosystem.

For buildings standardized on ASSA ABLOY hardware (Yale locks, Sargent exit devices, Norton closers, Adams Rite storefront, Medeco cylinders), Yale/Accentra closers keep the parts ecosystem consistent. Yale arm components are cross-compatible with Norton across the 50/2300/3000/4400 (Yale) and 1600/9300/7500/8000 (Norton) product families — same shoe assemblies, same hold-open arms, same parallel brackets. A real service advantage on mixed-brand ASSA ABLOY buildings.

Yale (ASSA ABLOY ACCENTRA) Models & Series We Service

Model / SeriesDescriptionTypical Use
4400 Series Institutional (ACCENTRA) Flagship ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 Institutional closer. Upgraded pinion and piston materials, staked valves, improved valve design. Non-handed, sizes 1-6 adjustable spring, barrier-free (ADA) compliant by default. Mounting: 2-3/8" x 6-3/4" hole spacing. The most efficient, dependable closer in the ASSA ABLOY US commercial lineup. Heavy-duty commercial / institutional
4400BF (legacy) Older barrier-free variant — superseded by current 4400 (which is now BF-compliant by default). Existing installations still serviced; new orders ship as standard 4400. Existing barrier-free installs
7500 (legacy) Older Yale designation sometimes found inside 4400 covers — same product, legacy cover labeling. Legacy install identification
4200 (legacy) Pre-4400 handed closer (required left-or-right specification plus mount type). Superseded by non-handed 4400 for new orders. Existing installations can be replaced with 4400 using same hole spacing. Legacy handed installs → 4400 replacement
3301 Series Narrow-stile closer from the 3000 Series — ¾" x 12" hole spacing. Adjustable closing speed, latching speed, backcheck, and spring tension. Designed for narrow-stile storefront and aluminum-frame doors. Narrow-stile storefront
3501 Series Same as 3301 but with full plastic cover (complete closer and spindles hidden). Cast aluminum alloy, Grade 1, barrier-free compliant. Replaces older 3501BF. Hole spacing: 2-3/8" x 6-3/4". Narrow-stile with full cover
1900 Series Historical landmark-compliant closer — designed to meet historical preservation codes on buildings where modern closer aesthetics are prohibited. Traditional design from the 1940s-60s period. Historical landmark buildings
SC400 / SC4400 (DISCONTINUED) Yale Security Closer for detention, government, and vandal-prone institutional. ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, UL-listed. Officially discontinued in recent catalog updates. Existing installations still serviced; new security-closer specs should move to Norton Rixson 7570 Security Closer (ASSA ABLOY sister product). Existing detention installs → Norton 7570 replacement
50 Series (legacy) Older Yale value-tier closer — cross-referenced by LCN 1250 as a direct replacement. Still found on older Florida commercial. Legacy value-tier → LCN 1250 replacement
2300 Series (legacy) Older mid-range Yale closer, arm-compatible with current 4400. Replacement parts still available through ASSA ABLOY. Legacy mid-range installs

Arm Types & Mounting Configurations

Door closer arm choice is the single biggest decision after brand/size — it determines mounting location, how the door behaves when fully open, and whether hold-open or controlled-stop is built in.

CodeArm TypeMountFunction
Reg (Regular) Regular arm Pull side Standard pull-side arm — projects into room, simplest mounting. 4400 is non-handed, works left or right.
TJ (Top Jamb) Top jamb arm Push side, frame Closer body mounts on frame, arm reaches to door. Requires 2-1/8" minimum top rail on door.
PA (Parallel) Parallel arm Push side, door Arm parallel to door in closed position, minimal projection beyond frame face — beneficial for vandal-prone and high-traffic applications.
HO Hold-open arm (7701-3) Any mount Friction hold-open arm. Yale part 400-3 = Norton 7701-3 (same physical part). Adjustable large hex bolt on the hold-open assembly determines holding position.
SA Spring arm Cush variant Spring cushion arm — absorbs over-travel impact at full open to protect door and wall.
Full Cover (3501) Full plastic cover Aesthetic Full cover hides complete closer and spindles — used on 3501 for architectural cleanup over 3301 (which has partial cover).
Dead Stop Dead-stop arm Parallel Parallel arm with integrated stop at adjustable angle — prevents door from traveling past set point.
Security Track Security track arm (SC4400 legacy) Push side Track-arm variant for the legacy SC400/SC4400 security closer — fixed-link, orbital-riveted joints, tamper-resistant. SC series discontinued; replace new specs with Norton 7570.

Common Yale (ASSA ABLOY ACCENTRA) Repair Scenarios

  • Yale 4400 hold-open arm won't hold door — hold-open loop assembly (Yale 400-13 = Norton 7701-13) commonly breaks at the cast-iron piece attached to the disk. Same part Norton uses; we stock for same-visit repair.
  • 4400 closing too slowly or too fast — main speed valve and latch speed valve adjustment. Staked valves on modern 4400 require correct adjustment tool. On-site service under 15 min.
  • 4400 spring force too strong / too weak — spring adjustment covers sizes 1-6 in single cylinder. Adjust to meet ADA opening force (5 lbf interior, 8.5 lbf exterior) without replacing closer.
  • 3301 / 3501 narrow-stile not closing fully — narrow-stile closers are more sensitive to latch speed and backcheck adjustment because they have less internal travel than full-stile closers. Sequential valve adjustment.
  • Legacy 4200 needs replacement (handed closer) — current 4400 is non-handed drop-in replacement. Same 2-3/8" x 6-3/4" hole spacing. Swap without re-drilling.
  • Parallel arm bracket loose or pulled — Yale 289A = Norton 1618A (same physical bracket). Replacement part available through either brand's distribution.
  • Oil leaking from 4400 cylinder — internal seal failure. Current production has 10-year warranty; ASSA ABLOY Accentra covers cylinder replacement under warranty.
  • SC4400 security closer (legacy) repair needed — product discontinued, but we can still service existing SC400/SC4400 installs with salvaged/OEM-sourced parts. For new security-closer specifications, we recommend Norton Rixson 7570 (same ASSA ABLOY family, current production).
  • Historical 1900 Series needs service — vintage parts rare but often serviceable through specialized rebuild shops. Replacement with modern equivalent may require historical preservation board approval on landmark buildings.

Automation & Access Control Integration

  • ADA compliance via 4400 adjustable spring — 4400 covers sizes 1-6 in single cylinder; adjust to ADA opening force without replacing unit.
  • Arm cross-compatibility with Norton — Yale 4400 arms physically interchangeable with Norton 7500/8000 arms. Shared shoe assemblies, hold-open arms (400-3 = 7701-3), parallel brackets (289A = 1618A). Real service advantage on mixed Norton/Yale buildings.
  • Electric hold-open integration — pair 4400 with separate magnetic hold-open tied to fire alarm for fire-door hold-open applications.
  • Access control integration — 4400 complements electric strikes and electrified panic devices for complete access-controlled openings. Compatible with PDK.io cloud access control.
  • Auto operator pairing — Yale/Accentra closers work cleanly with ASSA ABLOY's Besam and Record auto operator families for ADA-accessible entry automation.

Fire Rating & Code Compliance

  • 4400 Institutional Series: UL-listed for self-closing fire-rated doors, UL10C compliance, up to 3-hour assemblies. ANSI/BHMA A156.4 Grade 1 certified.
  • 3301 / 3501 narrow-stile: UL-listed for fire-rated narrow-stile door assemblies.
  • SC400 / SC4400 (legacy): Was UL-listed for labeled fire doors including 3-hour assemblies. Existing installs remain code-compliant; new specs move to Norton Rixson 7570.
  • ADA opening force: 5 lbf interior / 8.5 lbf exterior. 4400 multi-size cylinder adjusts to ADA compliance without closer replacement.
  • NFPA 80 annual fire door inspection: we service 4400 for inspection readiness including close-and-latch verification.
  • Yale (Accentra) certifications carry through the rebrand — existing Yale-labeled 4400s retain their original UL and ANSI certifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happened to Yale Commercial — is it discontinued?

Yale Commercial as a brand name is being phased out in favor of ASSA ABLOY ACCENTRA. The products are not discontinued — they're the same physical products with the same model numbers (4400, 3301, 3501, etc.), just rebranded. New production ships as "ASSA ABLOY ACCENTRA 4400 (formerly Yale 4400)." Existing Yale-branded installations receive identical service, and replacement parts carry across the rebrand. If your building has Yale closers and someone tells you they're obsolete, that's incorrect — they're just the old brand name for the current Accentra lineup.

Is Yale 4400 the same as Accentra 4400?

Yes — same product, different brand label. The ASSA ABLOY Accentra 4400 Institutional Series is what used to ship as Yale 4400 (and before that, Yale 400). Hole patterns identical (2-3/8" x 6-3/4"), arms cross-compatible across generations, parts interchangeable. When ordering replacement, either brand name is accepted.

Can Yale 4400 arms work on a Norton 7500?

Yes, for most arm components. Both brands are ASSA ABLOY and share engineering across the 4400/7500/8000 platform. Specifically: Yale 400-3 hold-open arm = Norton 7701-3 (same physical part). Yale 289A parallel bracket = Norton 1618A. Yale 400-13 hold-open loop assembly = Norton 7701-13. Shoe assemblies interchangeable. This is a real service advantage for buildings with mixed Norton/Yale closers — we can source whichever brand has parts locally. Does not apply to Norton CLP8000 CloserPlus or UNI8000 (Norton-specific arms with no Yale equivalent).

My old Yale 4200 needs replacement — what do I order?

Current Yale/Accentra 4400 is the direct replacement for 4200. Key difference: 4400 is non-handed (works left/right/push/pull/top-jamb from same unit) while 4200 required specifying hand and mount at order time. Hole spacing is the same (2-3/8" x 6-3/4"), so retrofit is typically no-drill. One 4400 SKU replaces what used to require separate 4200 SKUs for each configuration.

Is the SC4400 security closer still available?

No — SC400 and SC4400 Security Closer series are listed as DISCONTINUED in current ASSA ABLOY catalogs. Existing installations still serviced (we source parts through OEM channels when possible), but new security-closer specifications should move to Norton Rixson 7570 Security Closer — same ASSA ABLOY family, current production, same security feature set (fixed-link arms, orbital-riveted joints, Torx thread-locked fasteners).

What's the difference between 3301 and 3501?

Both are Grade 1 narrow-stile closers with the same internal cylinder. The difference is the cover: 3301 has a partial cover (spindles visible); 3501 has a full plastic cover hiding the complete closer and spindles for a cleaner architectural look. Functionally identical. Hole spacing (2-3/8" x 6-3/4") and mounting are the same — 3301 and 3501 are interchangeable at the cover level.

Do you service Yale 1900 Series historical closers?

Yes, but it's specialized work. The 1900 Series dates back to the 1940s-60s and uses older mechanical design that doesn't share parts with modern 4400. Replacement parts are rare and often require salvage or specialized rebuild shops. For buildings under historical landmark protection, we service existing 1900 installations in place when possible. For replacement, we coordinate with the local historical preservation board — modern closers may or may not be approved depending on jurisdiction.

Is Yale/Accentra 4400 worth spec'ing over LCN 4040XP?

Usually the decision comes down to what the rest of the building runs. If ASSA ABLOY hardware is standard (Yale locks, Sargent exits, Adams Rite storefront, Medeco cylinders), Yale/Accentra 4400 keeps parts ecosystem consistent. If Allegion hardware is standard (Schlage locks, Von Duprin exits, Falcon hardware), LCN 4040XP is the ecosystem match. Functionally both are Grade 1 peers; LCN has the longer warranty (30 years vs Accentra's 10), but Accentra 4400 has cleaner size-1-6 adjustment and broader arm cross-compatibility with Norton.
