Troubleshooting
- Keypad not responding: Replace batteries with fresh Duracell or Energizer AA alkaline batteries.
- Lock not locking/unlocking: Perform the door handing process — remove batteries, hold Program button while reinserting, then press Program again.
- Beeps but won't unlock: Verify you're entering the correct code. After multiple failed attempts, the lock may enter lockout mode — wait 60 seconds.
- Code rejected: The first 4 digits of each user code must be unique across all stored codes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the default Mastercode on a Kwikset SmartCode lock?
The factory default Mastercode (Programming Code) is typically not pre-set on newer models — you create one during initial setup. On older models, the default may be found on a sticker on the back of the lock interior. Check the installation guide that came with your lock for the specific default.
How many user codes can a Kwikset SmartCode lock store?
Most current SmartCode models (913, 914, 915, 917, 955) support up to 30 user codes. Older models may support 16 codes. Each code must be 4-8 digits long, and the first 4 digits of each code must be unique.
Can I program a Kwikset SmartCode lock without the Programming Code?
No. The Programming Code (Mastercode) is required to add, delete, or modify user codes. If you've lost the Programming Code, you'll need to perform a factory reset, which erases all existing codes and settings. The Programming Code sticker is usually located on the back of the interior assembly.
Will I lose my codes if I change the batteries?
No. All programmed codes are stored in non-volatile memory and survive battery changes. Simply replace the 4 AA batteries and your codes will still work. You do not need to reprogram anything after a battery swap.
What do I do if I'm locked out of my Kwikset SmartCode?
If you've forgotten all user codes, you can still use the physical key to unlock the door. If you've also lost the key, contact a licensed locksmith. A factory reset will restore default settings but requires physical access to the interior of the lock.
