⚠️ CAUTION — Read Before Changing Your Safe Combination

  • Always open the safe first and keep the door open while changing your combination. Test the new code at least 3 times with the door open before closing it. If you get locked out, drilling alone starts at $450+ depending on the safe's TL rating — and that doesn't include the repair and lock replacement, which adds another $250–$500 depending on the brand. A non-TL rated safe lockout can easily run $800 or more total for drilling, repair, and a new lock. Don't risk it.
  • Watch out for spring-loaded bolts. Many safes have spring-loaded locking bolts that automatically extend when the door swings shut. Before you start, open the safe door and put the lock in the locked position to retract the bolts. Look for a bolt release button on the inside edge of the door — it may be on the hinge side or the open side, depending on the model. Push it to lock the bolts in the retracted position so the door won't accidentally lock shut on you while you work.
  • If your lock is acting up randomly — beeping erratically, not responding consistently, or rejecting known-good codes — have it serviced or replaced immediately. A safe lock that fails completely is far more expensive to deal with than a planned repair. Don't wait until you're locked out of your valuables.

About LaGard Electronic Safe Locks

LaGard (now under dormakaba) electronic safe locks are one of the most popular digital lock platforms in the safe industry. The legacy series includes the LaGard Basic (single-user) and SafeGard 3000 (multi-user) which use a simple 6-digit combination entered directly on the keypad. The newer LaGard 700 Series (models 701, 702, 703, 705) uses a User ID + combination system and is available with or without a digital OLED display. All LaGard locks use non-volatile memory that preserves your combination without power.

🔄 Looking for the LaGard 700 Series (701, 702, 703, 705)?

The 700 Series uses a different programming method with User IDs and # commands. If your keypad has a slide-out battery tray or an OLED display screen, you have the 700 Series.

Open the Safe (Legacy Models)

Basic Operation

  1. Enter your valid 6-digit code (factory default: 1-2-3-4-5-6).
  2. A double signal (2 beeps + 2 LED flashes) indicates a valid code.
  3. Within 4 seconds, turn the handle to the open position and pull the door open.
❌ Three signals (3 beeps) = invalid code entry.

Change Your Code (LG Basic / Basic II)

Steps to Change the Combination

ALWAYS perform this with the safe door OPEN.

  1. Enter 0-0-0-0-0-0 (six zeros) to enter programming mode.
  2. Enter your existing 6-digit code one time.
  3. Enter your new 6-digit code two times.
  4. If a mistake is made, wait 30 seconds and repeat from step 1.
000000 → [old code] → [new code] → [new code]
✅ The lock will beep to confirm each step. Test the new code 3 times with the door open before closing.
⚠️ The new combination must differ from the old combination by more than one digit.

SafeGard 3000 — Manager Functions

The SafeGard 3000 supports both a Manager Code and a User Code. The Manager has full control over the lock, while the User can only open the safe.

Change Manager Code

  1. Enter 0-0-0-0-0-0 (six zeros).
  2. Enter the existing Manager Code.
  3. Enter the new Manager Code.
  4. Re-enter the new Manager Code to confirm.

Change User Code (Manager Only)

  1. Enter the Manager Code and hold down the last digit until the lock gives a double signal and the LED stays on.
  2. Press 1 to enter User Code change mode.
  3. Enter the new User Code.
  4. Re-enter to confirm.

Disable User Code (Manager Only)

  1. Enter the Manager Code and hold the last digit until double signal.

Re-Enable User Code (Manager Only)

  1. Enter the Manager Code and hold the last digit until double signal.
  2. Press 3 to re-enable the previously disabled User Code.

LaGard 700 Series — Open the Safe

The 700 Series uses a User ID + Combination system. Every user has a 2-digit ID (Master = 00, Manager = 01, Users = 02+) followed by their combination. The default Master combo is 12345678 (8 digits) and the default Manager combo is 123456 (6 digits).

Open — Display Keypad (702D, 703, 705)

  1. Press any key to wake the keypad.
  2. Enter your User ID (2 digits, e.g., 01).
  3. Enter your combination (6-8 digits).
  4. The screen shows "Open Lock" — select it.
  5. Within 4 seconds, turn the handle to the open position.
[wake] → 01 (ID) → 123456 (combo) → Open Lock
✅ 3 green LED flashes + 3 beeps = valid code, lock is opening.
❌ 3 red LED flashes + 3 low beeps = invalid code.

Open — Non-Display Keypad (701, 702)

  1. Press any key to wake the keypad (you'll see a brief red flash — this is normal, it's ignoring the wake key).
  2. Enter your User ID (2 digits) followed immediately by your combination (6-8 digits).
  3. Within 4 seconds, turn the handle to the open position.
[wake] → 01 123456 (ID + combo in one sequence)
✅ 3 green LED flashes + 3 beeps = valid, turn handle now.
❌ 3 red flashes + 3 low beeps = invalid code.

LaGard 700 Series — Change Your Combination

  5. Re-enter the new combination to confirm.
  6. The keypad beeps 3 times and flashes green LED = success.
[login] → Menu → Change Combo → [new code] → [new code]
✅ Test the new code 3 times with the door open before closing.

Change Combo — Non-Display Keypad (701, 702)

Non-display keypads use # commands instead of menus.

  1. Press any key to wake the keypad.
  2. Enter: # 3 1 + your User ID (2 digits) + your current combination + new combination + new combination + press the Return key (←).
  3. The keypad beeps 3 times and flashes green LED = success.

Battery Replacement (All Models)

LaGard Basic locks use a single 9V alkaline battery located behind the keypad on the exterior of the safe door. The SafeGard 3000 and all 700 Series keypads use two 9V alkaline batteries. To replace:

  1. Slide the keypad up slightly, or open the battery door on the bottom.
  2. Disconnect and remove the old battery.
  3. Connect a fresh 9V alkaline battery (Energizer or Duracell recommended).
  4. Slide the keypad back into position.
⚠️ Your combination is NOT lost during battery changes. The non-volatile memory chip retains your code for up to 3 years without power.

Low Battery Warning

Repeated audio/visual signals (LED flashes and beeps) during lock opening indicate low battery. If the battery becomes too low to operate, pressing any key will trigger the low battery warning. Replace immediately.

Wrong Try Penalty

After 4 consecutive incorrect codes, the lock enters a 5-minute lockout. The LED flashes red at 10-second intervals. At the end of the delay, two more incorrect codes will restart another 5-minute delay.

Troubleshooting

  • Code not working after battery change: Codes survive battery changes. Ensure you're entering the correct code. For legacy models, try the factory default 1-2-3-4-5-6. For 700 Series, try ID 01 + 123456 (Manager) or ID 00 + 12345678 (Master).
  • No response from keypad: Battery is dead. Replace with fresh 9V alkaline batteries.
  • Handle won't turn after valid code: Turn the handle within 4 seconds of hearing the confirmation beeps. If it still won't open, the bolt work may be binding — contact a safe technician.
  • Lost combination: A professional safe technician may be able to use the Super Master Reset Code (700 Series), the SafeGard Management Reset Code (legacy), or the Reset Box (700 Series only, requires physical access to the lock body). If none of these are available, drilling will be required.
  • 700 Series: Red flash on first key press: This is normal. The first key press wakes the system — the red flash means the keypad is ignoring that key and waiting for your actual input.
  • 700 Series: "Force Change" required: New users must change their default combination before they can open the lock. This is a security feature enabled by default on all 700 Series models.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the default code on a LaGard safe lock?

For legacy models (LG Basic, SafeGard 3000, ComboGard Pro), the factory default code is 1-2-3-4-5-6. For the 700 Series, the default Master code is ID 00 + 12345678 (8 digits) and the default Manager code is ID 01 + 123456 (6 digits).

What is the difference between the LaGard 701, 702, 703, and 705?

All are part of the 700 Series but differ in capacity: the 701 supports 3 users and 1 lock with no display. The 702 supports 30 users and 1 lock (available with or without display as 702D). The 703 supports 30 users and 2 locks with a display. The 705 is the flagship — 99 users, 5 locks, display, Bluetooth fob, timelock, and 6,000 audit events.

What's the difference between a Display and Non-Display keypad on the 700 Series?

Display keypads (702D, 703, 705) have an OLED screen with on-screen menus — you navigate with arrow keys and select options. Non-display keypads (701, 702) use # commands typed on the number pad (like #31 to change combo). Both do the same things, but display models are easier for day-to-day users while non-display models require knowing the # command codes.

What is the difference between Manager Code and User Code on a LaGard?

The Manager Code has full control — it can open the safe, change its own code, add or delete User Codes, and enable/disable User Codes. The User Code can only open the safe. On the Basic (single-user) model, there is only one code that functions as both.

Is LaGard the same as dormakaba?

Yes. LaGard was acquired by Kaba Group, which later merged with Dorma to form dormakaba. LaGard safe locks are now manufactured under the dormakaba brand. The 700 Series (701, 702, 703, 705) is the current-generation product line that replaces the legacy Basic, 39E, 66E, and Supra models.

Why does my LaGard give a double signal (2 beeps) when I enter my code?

A double signal (2 beeps + 2 LED flashes) means the code is valid and the lock is ready to open. You must turn the safe handle within 4 seconds to open the door. Three signals (3 beeps) means the code is invalid.
