⚠️ CAUTION — Read Before Changing Your Safe Combination

  • Always open the safe first and keep the door open while changing your combination. Test the new code at least 3 times with the door open before closing it. If you get locked out, drilling alone starts at $450+ depending on the safe's TL rating — and that doesn't include the repair and lock replacement, which adds another $250–$500 depending on the brand. A non-TL rated safe lockout can easily run $800 or more total for drilling, repair, and a new lock. Don't risk it.
  • Watch out for spring-loaded bolts. Many safes have spring-loaded locking bolts that automatically extend when the door swings shut. Before you start, open the safe door and put the lock in the locked position to retract the bolts. Look for a bolt release button on the inside edge of the door — it may be on the hinge side or the open side, depending on the model. Push it to lock the bolts in the retracted position so the door won't accidentally lock shut on you while you work.
  • If your lock is acting up randomly — beeping erratically, not responding consistently, or rejecting known-good codes — have it serviced or replaced immediately. A safe lock that fails completely is far more expensive to deal with than a planned repair. Don't wait until you're locked out of your valuables.

About the LaGard 700 Series

The LaGard 700 Series is dormakaba's current-generation electronic safe lock platform, replacing the legacy LaGard Basic, ComboGard Pro 39E, 66E, and Supra models. All 700 Series locks use the same lock body — the keypad model determines the feature level. The 701 is the entry-level (replaces the Basic), the 702 replaces the 39E/66E/Supra, and the 703/705 are high-security multi-lock models for commercial and vault applications.

The 700 Series uses a User ID + Combination system instead of the old "hold down last digit" method. Programming is done through # commands on non-display keypads or through the on-screen menu on display keypads (702D, 703, 705).

Timelock schedules are programmed through the LaGard Software on a PC, then sent to the keypad via USB. When Timelock is active, the lock can only be opened during scheduled open windows. Only the Master can change time and date settings while Timelock is active.

If a user has Time Delay Override privileges, they can bypass the time delay (but not the Timelock schedule) using their combo or Bluetooth fob credential.

Bluetooth Fob (705 Only)

The 705 supports a Bluetooth fob as a second credential. The fob cannot be used alone to open the lock — it must be paired with a user combination. Fobs are enrolled at the keypad and assigned to specific users through the Users menu.

⚠️ This erases ALL users, settings, timelock schedules, and fob assignments. The Master code reverts to 1-2-3-4-5-6.

Battery Replacement (All Models)

All LaGard 700 Series standard-profile keypads use two 9V alkaline batteries in a slide-out battery tray. Low-profile keypads require an external Battery Box or Power Adapter.

  1. Press the button on the bottom-right of the keypad to release the battery compartment.
  2. Slide out the battery tray.
  3. Replace both 9V batteries with fresh Energizer or Duracell alkaline batteries.
  4. Slide the battery tray back in until it clicks.
  5. Test the lock before closing the door.
⚠️ Your combinations are NOT lost during battery changes. The lock retains all codes and settings in non-volatile memory.

Low Battery Warning

When batteries are getting low, the keypad will give repeated audio and visual signals during lock operation. On display models, a low battery icon appears on screen. When critically low, you'll hear 3 low beeps with 3 red LED flashes. Replace immediately — if power is lost completely, hold a fresh 9V battery to the external contacts on the keypad face while entering your code.

Wrong Try Penalty

After 4 consecutive incorrect codes, the lock enters a 5-minute lockout. The LED flashes red at 10-second intervals. After the lockout expires, entering 2 more incorrect codes triggers another 5-minute penalty.

Lost Master Combination

If the Master combination is lost and the safe can be opened (by another authorized user or because the door is already open), a LaGard 700 Series Reset Box can be connected directly to the lock body to reset the system. This requires physical access to the lock body inside the safe door. The Reset Box cannot open a locked safe — it only resets combinations when you already have access.

If the safe is locked and no valid codes are available, a locksmith will need to drill the safe to gain access.

Troubleshooting

  • No response from keypad: Batteries are dead. Replace both 9V batteries. For low-profile keypads, check the Battery Box or Power Adapter connection.
  • 3 red flashes + 3 low beeps: Invalid code. Make sure you're entering the correct User ID first, then the combination. Check that you're not in a penalty lockout (LED flashing every 10 seconds).
  • Handle won't turn after valid code: You have 4 seconds to turn the handle. If it still won't open, the bolt work may be binding — contact a safe technician.
  • New user can't open the lock: All newly added users must change their initial combination first. This is a 700 Series security requirement.
  • "Force Change" prompt: The Master enabled Force Change mode. Follow on-screen prompts or use #52.
  • Lock expects a second code: Dual User mode is active — a second user must enter their ID and combo. The Master can disable this through the menu or #12 command.
  • Lock won't open during certain hours (705): Timelock is active. The lock can only be opened during scheduled windows.
  • Lost combination: If the safe is open, use a LaGard 700 Series Reset Box on the lock body. If locked, a safe technician will need to drill.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the LaGard 701, 702, 703, and 705?

All four use the same lock body — the keypad determines the feature level. The 701 is entry-level with 3 users and no display. The 702 supports 10 users and is available with or without a display. The 703 has an OLED display, supports 30 users, and can control up to 2 locks. The 705 is the flagship with 99 users, 5 locks, timelock schedules, Bluetooth fob support, and a 6,000-event audit trail.

What is the default combination on the LaGard 700 Series?

The factory default is User ID 00 (Master) with combination 1-2-3-4-5-6. The Master combination should be changed immediately after installation for security. A Manager user (ID 01) may also be pre-installed with combination 1-2-3-4-5-6.

What are # commands and how do I use them?

The # commands are the programming method for non-display keypads (701 and 702 without display). Instead of navigating a screen menu, you type a # followed by a command number, then your User ID and combination, then any parameters, and finish by pressing the Return Key (← back arrow). For example, #52 is the command to change your combination. Display keypads can also use # commands if preferred.

Do I need a display keypad or can I use the non-display version?

Both work with the same lock body and offer the same core functions. The display keypad (702D, 703, 705) is easier to use because you navigate menus visually. The non-display version (701, 702) uses # commands which are just as fast once you know them, and costs less. For basic open/close and code changes, either works fine. If you need audit viewing, multi-lock management, or time delay configuration, the display models are more convenient.

Can I use my old LaGard keypad with a 700 Series lock?

No. The 700 Series reversed the architecture — the keypad now holds the memory and intelligence, while the lock body is universal. Old LaGard keypads (Basic, 39E, 66E, Supra) are not compatible with 700 Series lock bodies, and 700 Series keypads are not compatible with legacy lock bodies. However, the 700 Series lock body mounts in the same footprint, so upgrading is straightforward.

Will my codes survive a battery change on the 700 Series?

Yes. All combinations, user settings, and audit data are stored in non-volatile memory and are retained indefinitely without power. You will not lose any codes when replacing batteries.
