Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about programming and managing electronic and mechanical locks and safe locks.
Can I program my lock myself, or do I need a locksmith?
Most electronic door locks (Kwikset, Schlage, Lockly, etc.) and electronic safe locks (S&G 6120, SecuRam, LaGard) are designed for user-programmable code changes. You can add, delete, and change codes yourself by following the instructions on each page. However, mechanical safe dial combination changes always require a professional locksmith with specialized tools. If you're unsure or uncomfortable, call us β we're happy to help.
What should I do if I forgot my lock's master code or combination?
For electronic door locks like Kwikset and Schlage, check for the factory code sticker on the back of the interior assembly. If you can't find it, a factory reset will erase all codes and restore the default β but you'll need physical access to the interior of the lock. For safe locks, if the master code is lost and no Management Reset Code was set, the safe may need to be drilled. Contact Key-En-Lock at (321) 224-5625 for professional help.
Will I lose my programmed codes if the batteries die?
No. All major electronic lock brands (Kwikset, Schlage, Lockly, S&G, SecuRam, LaGard, Alarm Lock) store codes in non-volatile memory that persists without power. Your codes survive battery changes and even extended periods without batteries. Simply replace the batteries and your codes will still work.
What type of batteries do electronic locks use?
It varies by brand. Kwikset SmartCode locks use 4 AA batteries. Schlage BE365 uses a 9V battery, while FE595/FE575 use 4 AA batteries. Safe locks (S&G, SecuRam, LaGard) typically use one or two 9V batteries. Alarm Lock Trilogy uses 5 AA batteries. Always use fresh alkaline batteries from brands like Duracell or Energizer β never use rechargeable or "heavy duty" batteries.
Should I always keep the door open when changing codes?
Yes β this is critical for safe locks and strongly recommended for door locks. Always change codes with the door open so you can test the new code before closing it. For safes, test the new combination at least 3 times with the door open before closing. Getting locked out of a safe because of a bad code change is expensive to fix.
