⚠️ Important — Read Before Changing Any Codes

  • Always keep the door open while programming or changing codes. Test the new code at least 3 times with the door open before closing it. Lockout service due to a bad code change is avoidable and expensive.
  • If your lock is acting up randomly — beeping for no reason, not responding consistently, or rejecting known-good codes — have it serviced or replaced now. A lock that fails completely will cost far more to deal with in an emergency than a planned repair or replacement. Don't wait until you're locked out.

About Schlage Electronic Locks

Schlage keypad and touchscreen locks are among the most popular electronic deadbolts in the residential market. They use a 6-digit Programming Code (found on a sticker on the back of the keypad) to manage all lock functions and support up to 19 user codes.

Schlage Touchscreen Models (BE375, FE695)

Schlage Touch keyless touchscreen locks follow the same programming sequences as the keypad models above. The only difference is that these models use a flat touchscreen instead of physical buttons. The Programming Code location and all code sequences remain identical.

Schlage Encode (BE489, BE499)

Schlage Encode and Encode Plus smart locks are programmed through the Schlage Home app on your smartphone rather than via the keypad. Download the app, create an account, and follow the in-app setup wizard to add and manage access codes, configure auto-lock, and set up WiFi connectivity.

Troubleshooting

  • Forgot Programming Code: You must remove the keypad from the door to find the sticker on the back. There is no way to recover or bypass a lost Programming Code without this sticker.
  • Lock not responding: Replace the 9V battery (BE365) or 4 AA batteries (FE595/FE575).
  • Code rejected: Ensure the first 4 digits of each new code are unique and do not match the Programming Code or any other User Code.
  • "X" pattern after programming: You made an error. Press the Schlage button repeatedly until the keypad lights up, then start the sequence over.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the default Programming Code on a Schlage keypad lock?

Schlage keypad locks ship with a unique 6-digit Programming Code printed on a sticker on the back of the interior assembly. There is no universal default code — each lock has its own factory-assigned code. Do not lose this sticker.

How many codes can a Schlage BE365 hold?

The Schlage BE365 can store up to 19 four-digit user codes plus the 6-digit Programming Code. Each user code must be unique in its first four digits. The FE595 and FE575 also support up to 19 user codes.

Can I change the 6-digit Programming Code on a Schlage lock?

Yes. Enter the Schlage button, then your current 6-digit Programming Code, then 1, then Schlage button again, then your new 6-digit code, then the Schlage button to confirm. The checkmark symbol and one beep confirm success.

What is Vacation Mode on a Schlage lock?

Vacation Mode disables all user codes so the lock can only be opened with the physical key. This is useful when you're away and don't want anyone using keypad codes. The Programming Code still works while Vacation Mode is active.

Where do I find my Schlage Programming Code if I lost the sticker?

You'll need to remove the interior assembly from the door to check for the sticker on the back of the keypad. If the sticker is missing or illegible, contact Schlage customer support or a licensed locksmith for assistance. There is no way to recover the code digitally.
