⚠️ CAUTION — Read Before Working on Your Sentry Safe

  • Always open the safe first and keep the door open while practicing your combination or programming a new code. Test at least 3 times with the door open before closing it.
  • Sentry Safes are NOT repairable once drilled. Unlike commercial-grade safes, most Sentry Safe models cannot be re-locked or repaired after a locksmith drills them. The safe body is typically destroyed in the process and must be replaced entirely.
  • Lockout cost: $150–$400 depending on the model. A basic Sentry fire safe can cost $150–$200 to drill open, while larger or more secure models can run $300–$400+. Since the safe can't be repaired after drilling, you'll also need to buy a new safe.
  • Do not force the handle or pry the door. Sentry Safes have anti-pry features and relocker mechanisms. Forcing the door can trigger the relocker, making the safe significantly more expensive to open.

About Sentry Safe Electronic Locks

Sentry Safe is the most widely sold consumer safe brand in America. Their electronic models use a simple keypad with a factory-set or user-programmable combination. Most Sentry electronic safes use either a standard digital keypad or a biometric (fingerprint) scanner with keypad backup.

Open the Lock

Basic Operation — Standard Keypad Models

  1. Enter your combination on the keypad.
  2. Within 4 seconds, turn the handle in the direction indicated (clockwise on most models).
  3. Pull the door open.
⚠️ If the keypad does not respond or the display is dim, replace the batteries. The battery compartment is on the inside of the door on most models — use the override key to access it.

Basic Operation — Biometric Models

  1. Place your enrolled finger on the fingerprint scanner.
  2. When the green light appears, turn the handle and open the door.
  3. If the fingerprint fails, enter your backup keypad combination instead.

Change the Combination

⚠️ Keep the Door Open

Always change your combination with the safe door OPEN. Test the new code at least 3 times before closing the door. If you set a new code incorrectly, you will be locked out and the safe will need to be drilled — and Sentry Safes are not repairable after drilling.

Standard Programming Method (Most Models)

  1. With the door OPEN, enter your current combination to unlock the safe.
  2. Press and hold the PROG (or P) button on the inside of the door for 3–5 seconds until you hear a beep.
  3. Enter your new combination on the keypad.
  4. Press the PROG (or P) button again, or press # (varies by model).
  5. Re-enter your new combination to confirm.
  6. Press the PROG button or # again.
  7. Test the new combination 3 times with the door open before closing.
💡 The exact procedure varies by model. Some older models use a red reset button inside the door. Check your owner’s manual for your specific model’s instructions.

Alternative Method — Red Reset Button (Older Models)

  1. With the door OPEN, locate the small red reset button on the inside of the door near the keypad.
  2. Press the red button. You’ll hear a beep or see a light.
  3. Enter your new combination on the keypad.
  4. Press the red button again (or press #).
  5. Test the new code 3 times with the door open.

Enroll Fingerprints (Biometric Models)

Add a Fingerprint

  1. Open the safe using your keypad combination.
  2. Press and hold the PROG button inside the door until you hear 2 beeps.
  3. Place the finger you want to enroll on the scanner. Hold until you hear a beep.
  4. Lift your finger and place it again when prompted. Repeat 2–3 times until the green light confirms enrollment.
  5. Most Sentry biometric safes store up to 2–4 fingerprints depending on the model.

Low Battery Warning

  • If the keypad beeps repeatedly or the display dims, replace the batteries immediately.
  • Most Sentry Safes use 4 AA batteries. Some older models use a 9V battery.
  • The battery compartment is on the inside of the door on most models.
  • If the batteries die completely, use the override key to open the door and replace them.
  • If you lost your override key, call a locksmith. Do not attempt to pry the door.

Common Issues

  • Keypad doesn’t respond: Replace the batteries. If the battery compartment is inside the door, use the override key to open it.
  • Code doesn’t work after battery change: Some models reset to the factory code when batteries are removed. Check the sticker inside the battery compartment or your owner’s manual for the factory code.
  • Lockout penalty: After 3–5 wrong entries, most Sentry Safes lock out for 20 seconds to 5 minutes. Wait for the lockout period to end, then try again carefully.
  • Lost override key: If your model has one, contact Sentry Safe customer service with your model and serial number. They may be able to send a replacement. If not, a locksmith will need to drill the safe. Not all electronic models include an override key.
  • Forgot combination: Try the factory code first. If that doesn’t work, contact Sentry Safe or call a locksmith. Remember: drilling a Sentry Safe destroys it.
  • Handle won’t turn after entering code: Turn the handle within 4 seconds of entering the code. If it still won’t turn, the bolt work may be jammed. Do NOT force it.

Override Key

Using the Override Key (Some Models Only)

Some Sentry Safe electronic models come with a tubular override key that bypasses the electronic lock. Not all models include one — check your owner's manual. The keyhole is typically located on the front face of the safe, either below or beside the keypad. Insert the key, turn it, and the safe will open regardless of the electronic lock status.

If your model came with an override key, keep it in a separate, secure location — not inside the safe. If you lose both your combination and your override key (or your model has no key), the only option is drilling, which destroys the safe.

When to Call a Professional

Contact Key-En-Lock for Sentry Safe service when:

  • You’re locked out and don’t have the override key
  • The electronic lock has failed completely
  • The handle or bolt work is jammed
  • You need the safe opened without damaging the contents inside
  • The relocker has been triggered by a failed break-in attempt

⚠️ Important: Sentry Safes Are Not Repairable After Drilling

Unlike commercial-grade safes (S&G, LaGard, SecuRam), Sentry Safes cannot be repaired or re-locked after being drilled open. The safe body is typically destroyed in the drilling process. Cost to drill open ranges from $150–$400 depending on the model, plus the cost of a replacement safe.

Before calling for drilling service, try these steps first:

  • Try the factory code (check owner’s manual or sticker inside battery compartment)
  • Try the override key
  • Replace the batteries (use the override key to access the battery compartment)
  • Contact Sentry Safe customer service at 1-800-528-9922 — they may be able to help recover your code

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a locksmith open a Sentry Safe without drilling?

In most cases, no. Sentry Safes are designed to resist manipulation, so drilling is usually the only option when the code and override key are both unavailable. Some experienced safe technicians may be able to pick certain tubular key locks, but this depends on the model.

How much does it cost to have a Sentry Safe drilled open?

Typically $150–$400 depending on the model and your location. Smaller fire safes are on the lower end, while larger or more secure models cost more. Keep in mind the safe cannot be repaired after drilling — you’ll need to purchase a new one.

My Sentry Safe beeped but won’t open. What do I do?

Make sure you’re turning the handle within 4 seconds of entering the code. If the beep pattern is different than normal (rapid beeping, long tone), the batteries may be low or you may be in a lockout period from too many wrong attempts. Wait 5 minutes and try again with fresh batteries.

Can I replace the electronic lock on a Sentry Safe?

Generally, no. Sentry Safes use proprietary lock mounting systems that are not compatible with standard aftermarket safe locks (S&G, LaGard, SecuRam). If the electronic lock fails, contact Sentry Safe customer service for a replacement lock specific to your model.
